Job summary

An exciting opportunity has opened to undertake the Maternity Support Worker apprenticeship role within our maternity departments at the King's College Hospital and Princes Royal University Hospital. The role involves, supporting the midwifery teams to provide individualised care to birthing people and babies throughout their maternity journey and facilitating a positive experience.

We are looking for applicants with some experience in working in a clinical setting who can work independently undertaking allocated tasks, whilst remaining under the direct/indirect supervision of a registered midwife.

Candidates will be enrolled on the Senior Healthcare Apprenticeship programme.The post is a 2-year fixed term fully paid contract whilst you are on the apprenticeship programme, with scope to extend to a permanent role on completion of the programme.

The academic aspect of the course will be facilitated by the external training provider, and you will be allocated time to attend study days. An academic assessor and the Practice Development Midwife will support you throughout the duration of the course. Training would be provided within the working time whilst working on the antenatal ward, labour ward, theatres, postnatal ward and in the community setting.

The post is rotational, and the maternity support worker would be expected to work pro rota including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties of the job

The maternity support worker (MSW) is a valued member of our team and plays an important role in supporting the staff, the birthing person/families and babies.

The candidate would carry out a range of delegated duties under the supervision of the qualified staff including, maternal observation such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory, temperature CO monitoring, urinalysis, cleaning and stocking. The MSW will also support the team with maternal and neonatal screening as well as carrying out venepuncture when required/trained. The maternity support worker will support and provide evidenced based information to the birthing person and their families and carry out administrative and housekeeping duties.

The PDM team will provide in house mandatory training updates and competency/skills session throughout your training. Our specialist infant feeding team would provide specific training relating to the care of the birthing person and baby including infant feeding support.

Clinical Responsibilities All tasks and care provision must only be carried out following training and attainment of the required level of competency as set out within the MSW training and competency document and under the direct supervision of the midwife. To assist patients with activities of daily living whilst encouraging independence, as appropriate. Demonstrate encourage and assist patients in undertaking therapeutic activities within parameters of agreed care plans and under guidance of registered practitioners. To monitor and record patients clinical observations, escalating appropriately to a registered nurse as required . To assist with patient nutritional needs eating, drinking, menu selection, meal delivery and special diets according to the individual patients needs.

Administrative and clerical duties To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/ paperwork to other departments, booking patient transport and sending referrals. To provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing. Promptly referring enquiries to the relevant person. To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment.
