Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen as we are currently recruiting for a dynamic and enthusiastic IPC audit and surveillance nurse to join our Infection Prevention and Control Team.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible and work across all sites within Kings College NHS Trust as required by the Infection Prevention & Control/Surgical Site Infection Scheme audit and surveillance programmes, working as an individual and as part of the Team.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Infection Prevention & Control Team, the IPC Audit and Surveillance Nurse will support systematic collection of data as part of national/local surveillance programmes, on the prevalence of healthcare associated infections and compliance with Infection Prevention & Control standards. This will include Surgical Site Infection Surveillance programme and antibiotic stewardship .

To participate in the implementation and maintenance of Infection Prevention & Control surveillance/prevalence and patient safety audits, including writing reports and presenting results to relevant stakeholders including the Infection Prevention & Control Committee.

Main duties:

Undertake all Infection Prevention & Control audits and provide initial feedback of audit results.

Produce timely full audit reports and feedback.

Follow up actions plans generated from the audits.

Assists in the investigation of outbreaks of infection.

Assist in working together with others including UKHSA when there is an outbreak of communicable diseases.

Acknowledge own limitations and seek advice when situations arise that are beyond own knowledge base.

Demonstrate a good understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures.

Participate in antimicrobial ward rounds, including 'IV to oral switch'.

Assists in the collection of relevant IPC and other clinical data for use by the IPC Team, including surveillance data.

Maintains and updates audit and outbreak records.

Undertake observations, audits and surveillance of infection control procedures and measures as part of infection prevention & control accreditation, including IV line, catheter, hand hygiene and cleaning/efficacy audits.

Assist in providing an efficient, safe and confidential IPC service.

Sensitively challenge inappropriate practice and poor compliance with infection prevention and control policies, within own limitations, supported by the IPCN/s.

Maintain good working relationships with colleagues and provider organisations.

Develop and implement audit schedules for IPC and validation audits of the hospital sites.

Assist in education of others on IPC issues, including Link Nurses, practitioners and clinical housekeepers and the MDT.

Due to the nature of the job, needs to be flexible, coping with frequent

unpredictable changes within daily workload.

Using keyboard and database skills to facilitate documentation and information gathering. Able to use several different software packages including Excel, Microsoft, PowerPoint.

Maintains and updates records.

Facilitates the exchange of information on infection prevention and control between the NHS and other agencies.

Taking phone calls and passing on messages.

Assist in the production of training materials when needed.

Organising and planning events including hand hygiene week, IPC link programmes, preceptorship, and study days as necessary and collating supporting information materials.

Inputting, monitoring and checking data systems used by the IPC team.

Developing and maintaining effective electronic and paper filing systems, to ensure that information is kept securely and is accessible to other members of the team.

Preparing agenda, meeting papers, taking minutes and distributing notes of meetings and action logs as well as typing up any group discussions as necessary.
