Job summary

The tongue-tie clinic's support worker will work in a dynamic multidisciplinary team, supporting staff in all aspects of infant feeding care.

The post holder is required to undertake tasks involving direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Lactation Consultant. They will be responsible to set up and tidy up the clinic, including correct instruments disposal, check equipment stock, provide training to junior and temporary support staff, welcome and support patients, collaborate with the Lactation Consultants and Paediatric Surgeons and provide infant feeding support to babies aged between 8 days and 26 weeks who are affected by ankyloglossia. The Support Worker will maintain a high standard of client care, adhering to all Trust and Maternity Services policies and guidelines.

Main duties of the job

Prepare the clinic, making sure all the equipment is available and in date.

Complete patient check-in and check-out.

Maintain the facilities clean and tidy between patients.

Support the Lactation Consultants/Paediatric Surgeons in performing frenulotomies.

Support patients by providing infant feeding support and discussing feeding plans with the named Lactation Consultants.

Dispose of the surgical instruments correctly.

Be confident in the instruments decontamination and sterilisation process.

  • NVQ level 2
  • Completion of Band 3 Maternity Support Worker or Band 3 Health Care Assistant training
  • UNICEF BFI training

Desirable

  • Breastfeeding counsellor/peer supporter training

Experience

  • Experience of supporting infant feeding
  • Previous experience working with women and babies
