Job summary

Kings College Hospital and Kings College London are seeking to appoint a full time Deputy Programme Director for the Dental Therapy and Hygiene course. The post holder will work under the direction of the Programme Director and assist and support the delivery of the BSc programme and ensure that the course meets the clinical and academic quality assurance standards as set by Kings College London and the General Dental Council. A commitment to the delivery of high-quality patient care, service innovation and education is an essential requirement of this role.

As this role evolves thedeputy director responsibilities may change with development of the programme and as part of the appraisal process, if required, any changes would be part of a HR consultation process.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible to assist the Programme Director in the clinical and academic education of student dental therapist/hygienists within the School of Dental Therapy and Hygiene. (30 students per year x 3 years). The post holder will support with the clinical supervision of 6,000 outpatient contacts p.a. across various sites and specialties that are carried out by students, whilst maintaining the Trust's standards of quality and safety in terms of service delivery and the University's standards in terms of academic performance and student management. This is in conjunction with working with the Programme Director to meet the standards and requirements of various stakeholders such as the GDC Education quality assurance team and Health Education England.

This includes assisting with

Ensuring that all aspects of the terms of reference for the DTH Programme are met and in particular focusing on clinical dental treatment within the educational context of the training programme.

Line management of the DTH Tutors.

Providing advice on the development and organisation of Clinical education of dental therapists and dental hygienists.

Delivering the DTH Programme in compliance with local and national regulatory standards and to ensure that all DTH Tutors meet prescribed programme standards.

To assist the Programme Director in working with the Dean for Education (KCL) and subject matter experts to

Agree the programme structure, teaching and learning strategies, assessment design and training delivery.

Agree quality measures which align to the GDCs standards or Education, ensuring standards are clear, transparent and well communicated.

Support the preparation, conduct and follow-up action for visits and assessments and/or accreditation of programmes by external bodies such as the GDC.

Participate in university-level quality-management processes, such as annual reporting cycle, programme review, quinquennial review and peer support, working closely with members of the Faculty professional services team

Ensure that all Tutors met the required training standards and to develop continuing professional development programmes for the team.

Support the Admissions and induction process for DTH students.

Provide educational development for the Tutors.

Assess student competence and progression, engaging with relevant KCL committees.

Work with nominated KCL staff on student management including welfare, fitness to practice, competence and professional standards.

Ensure that mechanisms are in place for ensuring that safety arrangements, risk assessments and ethics approval are conducted with regard to teaching sessions/ projects carried out by students.

To assist the Programme Director in working with the nominated Clinical Lead (KCH) to

Provide assurance that the quality and safety of clinical care delivered as part of clinical education complies with Trust standards.

Provide assurance that clinical risk and clinical governance issues are managed in compliance with Trust requirements.

Provide assurance that all patient related activities complies with wider NHS performance standards.

To assist the Programme Director in working work with the Care Group General Manager (KCH) to

Manage the allocated budget for the DHT Programme.

Ensure adequate clinical resource is in place and is used effectively to meet the requirements of the curricula

Line manage the DTH Tutors and associated staff, including recruitment, induction, appraisal, statutory and mandatory training and personal development.

Advise on equipment and resource needs to support the Programme and curriculum delivery.

Ensure that all KCH staff (Tutors and others) are managed in compliance with the Trusts values and all relevant workforce policies, standards and requirements.

Governance/Quality Control

Comply with Trust and Care Group the clinical policies including IRMER, Health & Safety requirements, Data Protection and other legislation or procedures relevant to the safe practice of dentistry for both patients and staff.

Assist the Programme Director in undertaking educational quality assurance processes that meet the GDC Standards of Education requirements and Preparing for Practice.

Assist the Programme Director in participating in all aspects of quality assurance and clinical governance, including audit, peer review and clinical supervision.

Work with the Programme Director to participate in annual appraisal processes and demonstrate progression in line with key performance indicators agreed at appraisal.

Maintain CPD requirements to ensure maintenance on the General Dental Council Register.

People Management and Performance

Work with the Programme Director to lead, manage and motivate staff within the department to deliver and improve services so meeting the needs of students and patients

Provide support for the department to manage expected and unexpected events within the scope of the student / staff activity.

Supervise and monitor students rostering and skills mix to maximise effective delivery of an effective service (educational and academic).

Assist the Programme Director in ensuring risk assessments are completed and actions implemented to meet the health and welfare needs of staff, patients and students.

To work with the Programme Director to regularly monitor and report on quality assurance within organisational frameworks.

General
