Are you a passionate, motivated and dynamic Critical Care nurse who would like to develop and grow your leadership skills in a band 6 role? If so we would like you to join our Adult Critical Care team here at The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH).
Our multidisciplinary team are friendly and proactive, providing level 3 and level 2 Critical Care in a purpose built, spacious ten bedded unit. This very busy dynamic unit cares for complex, critically ill patients from a variety of specialities.
As part of the Trusts Critical Care 'Care Group' we also work collaboratively and have close relationships with the Critical Care units at the Denmark Hill site for both the delivery of patient care and provision of education.
The post will offer you excellent personal and professional development opportunities in management and leadership. You will be an experienced critical care nurse, and be able to demonstrate a high standard of care in a professional and compassionate manner. You will work closely with our dedicated team including the Matron, Practice Development Nurse, Audit nurse, Clinical Information Systems (CIS) Nurse and our Critical Care Outreach team (iMobile) and commitment to service improvement to maintain the quality and safety of patients is essential.
You must have achieved a specialist course in Critical Care as well as a Mentorship qualification or equivalent. A UK recognised degree in Nursing (or equivalent) is desirable.
Main duties of the job
- To provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to both critically ill patients and their relatives within King's College Hospital.
- To take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of Matron, or as delegated by the Lead Nurse/ Head of Nursing.
- To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of nurses within the Critical Care Unit Nursing establishment.
- To act as a clinical resource within the Critical Care Units and across the Division, as necessary.
- To act as a positive role model at all times demonstrating professionalism and compassion in your actions and behaviour.

1. CLINICAL PRACTICE
- To adhere to the NMC The Code: Professional Standards (2018) and adhere to this at all times.
- To demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of any patients receiving treatment in the unit/department.
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients in the unit on an ongoing basis, co-ordinating the care given by all members of the clinical team.
- To accurately assimilate and interpret clinical information about the patients condition, instigate appropriate remedial action and promptly report changes.
- To act as a clinical resource to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives.
- To ensure accurate records are maintained reflecting both changes in thepatients condition and the treatment delivered.
- To ensure patients and their relatives are updated regularly with accurateinformation, for this to be presented in a sensitive way and one they understand.

- To act as a mentor/practice supervisor to junior staff, responsible for the orientation, supervision and ongoing development of junior nurses and preregistration students, in conjunction with Line Manager and Practice Development Team.
- To act as a mentor/practice supervisor to learners undertaking further education, ensuring a positive learning experience and facilitating the development of their clinical skills and knowledge.
- To contribute to the wider educational activities within the Division ensuring attendance at and contributing to the delivery of educational activities to the multi-disciplinary team within the Division.
- To promote and encourage the application of research and evidence based practices.
- To participate in any research projects conducted in the clinical area, as appropriate.
- To act as link nurse (e.g for infection control, tissue viability) ensuring attendance at and contribution to Trust wide meetings, being responsible for ensuring dissemination of relevant information from these meetings to all staff within the units.
3. MANAGEMENT
- To manage clinical workload effectively, ensuring care is prioritised appropriately.
- To contribute positively towards the delivery of a cost effective service, adjusting staffing levels to meet demand and assisting the unit manager to keep within agreed resources.
- To assist with the ongoing organisation of the unit, including liaison with Medical Clinicians and Bed Managers to ensure optimal bed usage at all times, facilitating timely admission and discharge of patients.
- To act as a Team Leader to an identified group of staff, monitoring anddocumenting the development of their clinical skills.To develop own skills in recruitment and retention, sickness management and performance management as determined by line manager.
- To actively support the process of risk management and health & safety upholding relevant policies to promote this and ensuring incidents are reported appropriately (in writing) and helping identify ways of preventing errors, near misses and accidents to both patients and staff.
