Job summary

This post would be suitable for any trainee who has successfully completed a 2-year Foundation School programme or has achieved equivalent competencies. Previous experience of haematology would be advantageous but not essential. Ideally trainees will have completed their MRCP Part One and will have an up to date certification for Adult Life Support training.

Although these appointments are not accredited for training the appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the each department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named educational supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors. The experience and opportunities offered would be excellent experience for applicants planning a career in medicine.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited to work in the department of Haematological Medicine at King's College Hospital, for a minimum period of 6 to 12 months. This is an exciting opportunity to join a centre of excellence specialising in haemato-oncology, bone marrow transplantation, red cell disorders, coagulation and transfusion medicine. Our integrated haemato-oncology and transplant service has 4 dedicated wards treating all forms of haematological malignancy as well as marrow failure disorders. It carries out all forms of autologous and allogeneic transplantation and has an active cell and gene therapy program. The department looks after approximately 1200 adults and children with Sickle Cell disease. King's is an NHS Exemplar Centre for prevention and management of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and has a large multi-disciplinary Anticoagulation and Clinical Thrombosis Team.

There are ample educational and training opportunities. The Trust Doctor post does not have formal educational recognition, but appointees will work alongside CMT trainees. On-call commitment 1:10 full shift rota. Appointment will be for a period of 6 months in the first instance. The posts will provide excellent haematology experience and plentiful educational opportunities including weekly protected teaching and numerous departmental seminars. Our SHOs are actively encouraged to engage in research projects.
