Job summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated General X-ray Superintendent to join the team at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Orpington. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and manage the General X-ray department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality diagnostic imaging services to our patients.

The post holder will oversee the X-ray departments across three sites: PRUH, Beckenham Beacon, and Orpington Hospital. Working closely with the Operational Lead Superintendent, Radiographers, and Radiologists, they will optimize all aspects of the service.

The X-ray department at PRUH recently replaced one X-ray room with a brand new Samsung DR kit, with plans to replace the other three GE DR rooms within the next 18 months. Orpington Hospital and Beckenham Beacon also have Samsung DR equipment.

The X-ray service is fast-paced and interesting but can also be demanding, which will suit someone who is quick-thinking, professional, and dedicated to working as part of a strong clinical team. The applicant will be passionate about high standards of care and professionalism, a team player with excellent communication, negotiation, and teaching skills. Additionally, they will have a keen interest in and experience with service delivery and staff management skills.

Main duties of the job

As part of the larger Radiology management team, the Superintendent holds line management responsibilities for rotational radiographic staff and is required to work as an operational lead for the imaging department on a rotational basis with the other Superintendent Radiographers.

Other duties include:

  • Lead, manage, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the General X-ray department.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of radiographers and support staff, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory standards, guidelines, and protocols, including those set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to enhance efficiency, quality, and patient safety.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care pathways and outcomes.
  • Manage departmental resources effectively, including equipment, staffing, and budgets.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in diagnostic imaging technology and participate in professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Be the clinical radiographic lead in plain film participating in agreed shifts.
  2. Be able to interpret complex medical conditions and facilitate that the relevant diagnostic procedure is undertaken.
  3. Demonstrate a highly specialist knowledge of Radiographic technique and be able to adapt that technique to the more challenging patient groups (e.g. trauma, paediatric, ventilated, sedated, antisocial, violent and those physically or mentally impaired).
  4. This post can involve frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions (e.g. body fluids and open wounds) and requires working in hazardous environments (e.g. Radiation Controlled Areas, Controlled High Magnetic Field Areas and Controlled High Radio Frequency Field Areas.)
  5. Be responsible for maintaining the highest levels of knowledge and the latest techniques within plain film.
  6. Be accountable to the relevant Consultant Radiologists for the development and implementation of agreed imaging protocols and standards.
  7. Adapt the service to respond to long and short term demands. Ensure the daily workload is organised in line with clinical priorities. Rearrange work lists in case of equipment failure and be responsive to the inconvenience caused to patients by short notice cancellation of appointments
  8. The position will involve dealing with distressing circumstances. The ability is needed to deal with sensitive information and act in a profession and caring manner towards both patients and staff.
  9. Accountable for ensuring Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, records maintained and corrective action taken where required.
  10. Excellent communication skills needed to liaise with both staff within the department, throughout the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
  11. The position will involve continuous patient transfers and manipulation. The post holder will be responsible for their and other staff adherence to Manual Handling and Risk guidelines (using the correct manual handling equipment and make sure it is maintained). Ensuring all infection control standards are adhered to and high levels of cleanliness are maintained.
  12. To investigate and report on all clinical and non-clinical incidents in line with Risk Management policies, making recommendations and implementing remedial actions where appropriate.
  13. Monitor and adapt measures to ensure archiving of all examinations to Picture Archive Computer System (PACS) and other storage media. Ensure accuracy of patient and examination data in Radiology Information System (RIS). To monitor, supervise, report and correct any defects in the data integrity of the Information systems and PACS.
  14. Co-ordinating Quality Assurance processes within plain film, reporting to the Lead Superintendent Radiographer, Radiology Service Manager and other staff where necessary.
  15. To have the ability to multitask within plain film. Also be able to work with continual interruptions.
  16. The post holder will be responsible for the adherence to imaging safety guidelines within the unit. Responsible for the safe entry of patients, relatives and staff to the magnetic field including the requesting and reporting of orbit and skull x-rays.

Managerial Responsibilities:
  1. Be responsible for formulating, assessing and modifying operational policy in line with changing demand for services. Modify services in line with changes in local, National and DH policies guidelines.
  2. Be responsible for equipment testing, quality audit and reject analysis. Ensuring all results are documented and reported. Implementing any change on the results found.
  3. To ensure correct accurate records are kept within the modality and produce management information as required.
  4. Be responsible for the operational running of the plain film unit, ensuring that a responsive and flexible service is provided to the Trust and its patients.

  4. To undertake formalised assessments of students and staff, documenting findings in accordance with each academic institutions requirements.
