This fantastic job opportunity has become available for an AA/BMF CNS to join our highly motivated, professional and dynamic myeloid CNS team within the Department of Haematological Medicine. We have a large established myeloid team who include physicians and nurses with specialist interests in myeloid leukaemia's (AML, CML), Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), Aplastic Anaemia (AA), Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH), constitutional bonemarrow failures (BMF) and other myeloid diseases. We are highly recognised as an nationally and internationally established and comprehensive Myeloid/BMF referral service.

Main duties of the job

You will have significant experience in caring for and supporting patients with Hematological malignancies and a comprehensive understanding of all treatment modalities and the associated complexities involved in caring for this group of patients. With a clear understanding of the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist as a clinical expert, leader, researcher and educator, you will possess excellent communication and organizational skills. You will also be committed to the development of specialist nursing practice and demonstrate evidence of ongoing professional and academic development. You will have a first degree and be willing to undertake a Masters degrees or stand along modules to enhance your practice in the future.

Job responsibilities

This new & exciting post forms part of a new initiative within the Department of Haematological Medicine in developing the existing bone marrow failure (BMF) service. Recent appointments of consultants with specialist interests in Aplastic Anaemia (AA) & Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) complement our existing national & international reputation in the management of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) & other myeloid diseases allowing us to establish a more comprehensive BMF service.

The post holder will work closely in a team of 5 clinical nurse specialists together with Consultant Haematologists, Specialist Registrars & other senior nurses in establishing a patient centred service for a large cohort of patients with myeloid malignancies, MDS, Aplastic Anaemia and PNH to ensure local & national objectives are achieved. Each clinical nurse specialist will be responsible for leading and developing the service for PNH or Aplastic Anaemia but will also be responsible in delivering a nurse led service to other bone marrow failure disease groups.

Practitioners will assess patients, plan & implement care, provide specialist advice, maintain associated records, be the lead specialist in a defined area of nursing care, provide specialist education & training to other staff & students as well as participate in relevant research and clinical audits.

Specialist Clinical Practice

  • Work in a team lead by the Senior Myeloid CNS together with another BMF CNS in providing a seamless and comprehensive nurse led service in delivering and coordinating expert care to a large specialist group of patients.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve clinical practice.
  • Work with other team members in the wider haematology department to meet service needs and improve patient experience.
  • Assess health, health related and nursing needs of patients or clients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care for individuals and groups. This can include:
    • Managing a patient caseload as key worker;
    • Ordering diagnostic tests;
    • Making and receiving referrals;
    • Admitting and discharging patients for specified conditions and within agreed protocols;
  • Set, implement and evaluate standards and criteria of nursing intervention by planning and providing and evaluating specialist clinical nursing care across a range of care provision to meet the health needs of individuals and groups requiring specialist nursing.
  • Support and empower patients and clients, their families and other carers to influence and participate in decisions concerning their care by providing information on a range of specialist nursing care and services.
  • Act as a resource for the development of clinical expertise in this particular field offering expert clinical advice and support to both patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Liaise with the clinical trials co-ordinator in respect of BMF clinical developments. To be able to identify appropriate patients for admission into clinical trials. Act as resource for the clinical trails team and take back the responsibility of key worker when patients leave trials.
  • Develop a comprehensive cross cover strategy between the CNSs across the patient groups to maintain an uncompromised and high standard of service delivery at all times.
  • Manage a caseload of patients as key worker.
  • Provide and develop relevant patient support groups/patient forums

Clinical and Professional Leadership

  • Provide effective clinical leadership and act as a role model to other nurses in the Care group and Trust to improve standards and quality and to develop professional practice.
  • Develop communication networks to support patients and practitioners within the Trust, local and tertiary level.
  • Ensure care interventions are evidence based and reflect best clinical practice.
  • Actively participate in relevant fora at Care group, Trust, or PCG/PCT or National/ International level to represent the service perspective.
