King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
This job is now closed
Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in the Upper limb unit, Department of Orthopaedics, King's College Hospital.
The unit consists of 9 consultants who undertake a wide spectrum of work from hand to shoulder. The successful applicant will predominantly work for 6 months with shoulder/elbow surgeons before transferring to the hand/wrist team for a further 6 months although there will be significant overlap between these on a day to day basis. The clinical workload is reflective of King's status as one of London's Major Trauma Centres as well as a tertiary referral centre for complex cases within the region.
The unit has an active research group that meets regularly and has a strong background in generating outputs, either in peer review journals or in the form of posters and presentations at international meetings. The successful applicant will be strongly encouraged in this regard.
The orthopaedic department at King's is also actively involved in postgraduate education and runs several courses per year that are open to applicants from across the UK. These include FRCS Orth revision courses for Orthopaedics and also Hand surgery as well as simulation courses for shoulder arthroscopy. Further cadaveric courses are being planned for 2018 onwards. The upper limb fellows are encouraged to contribute to these as part of the faculty in order to strengthen their CVs and add to their teaching experience ahead of consultant applications.
Main duties of the job
There is ample exposure to challenging upper limb trauma under the supervision and guidance of senior colleagues along with opportunities to work independently. The Fellow contributes to the general orthopaedic on-call rota as a non-resident Senior Clinical Fellow, supported by an on-call registrar.
Simple and complex elective work is done in sufficient volume to allow most candidates to consider independent consultant practice by the end of their fellowship.
