Job summary
Dr Elaine Hughes is a paediatric neurologist specialising in children's epilepsy and directs the regional epilepsy service - she works between King's and Evelina Children's Hospital. Dr David McCormick leads a nationally commissioned neurorehabilitation service and has a special interest in epilepsy. Prof Deb Pal offers clinics in epilepsy management and epilepsy genetics in addition to his extensive research in this field. The service is supported by the regional paediatric neurology service at the Evelina Children's Hospital. There are close links with the Belgrave Department of Child & Family Psychiatry and with colleagues in Neuropsychology. There are 12 consultant neurosurgeons within the regional neurosurgical service, 3 of whom have special expertise in paediatric neurosurgery -Mr Chandler, Mr Bassi and Mr Zebian.
Lion ward is a 10 bed Paediatric Neurosciences ward. Two beds are for children receiving structured neurorehabilitation from the multidisciplinary team, and one videotelemetry bed is for children being evaluated with a view to epilepsy surgery. The other beds are for children receiving neurosurgical and neurology management for a range of conditions, including epilepsy surgery, hydrocephalus, brain tumours, brain haemorrhages or abscesses, traumatic brain injury, meningo-encephalitis etc.
Main duties of the job
This post is suitable for a doctor at middle grade level (registrar/ST4+) interested in advancing their training in paediatric neurosciences.
Ideally trainees will have completed their MRCPCH Part 2 (or equivalent) and will have up-to-date certification for Advanced Paediatric Life Support training and level 3 children's safeguarding. The appointee will be given the opportunity to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the department and the hospital.
Duties
Clinical: Daily reviews of patients on Lion ward
Receive and discuss new referrals from in-patients admitted under general paediatrics/ sub-specialty teams and external hospitals
Attendance and participation at out-patient Epilepsy and Neurology clinics
Attending weekly neuro-oncology MDT
Attending weekly neuro-radiology MDT
Participate in the general Paediatric on-call Rota
Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance
Teaching: Assist in conjunction with consultants with the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduate trainees in paediatrics.
Contribute to the departmental teaching programme, including simulation, case presentation and safeguarding.
Research:To be involved in the research interests of the department will be encouraged.
QI/audit: To be involved in departmental quality improvement activity encouraged.
Management: To be involved in level-appropriate management opportunities including MDT working encouraged.
