Job summary

This post will be based in Orpington Neurorehabilitation Centre and will be required to provide cross cover between the 2b Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit, the Neuro-surgical Step-Down Unit and Frank Cooksey Rehabilitation Unit (1b). The new 2b Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit was recently opened in Orpington Hospital in July 2016. The key aim of Ontario 2b is to offer specialist active rehabilitation to patients with neurological needs, to assist them in achieving physical, cognitive and emotional wellbeing, facilitating family, vocational and community engagement. The ward currently has 20 inpatient beds, 14 beds are secured for 2b Neurological Care and 6 further beds for Neuro-surgical Step Down patients.

The Frank Cooksey Rehabilitation Unit provides specialist neurological rehabilitation in a 15 bedded unit. In this unit complex physical and cognitive rehabilitation is provided to patients who suffered a stroke, traumatic brain injury, polyneuropathy, myopathy, spinal cord injury, or relapse of progressive neurological disease.

Main duties of the job

Within this role, the successful applicant will work collaboratively as part of multi-disciplinary teams led by a team of threeConsultants in Rehabilitation Medicine andClinical service Lead to support the day-to-day running of the Neuro-Rehabilitation 2B and Step-Down unit and Frank Cooksey Rehabilitation Unit. The successful applicant will be required to attend and actively contribute to family meetings, complex patient discharge meetings, key-working duties and multidisciplinary team reviews. There are opportunities within this role to further develop clinical skills and to attend and review patients in a weekly MDT Rehabilitation Clinic Specialist Spasticity Clinic and Intrathecal Baclofen Clinic.

The Medical, Nursing, Therapy Neuropsychology and specialist social worker work with patients to deliver patient-focused, evidence based rehabilitation program to support functional independence and reintegration to home and community. The successful applicant will also be required to attend and actively contribute to family meetings, complex patient discharge meetings, key-working duties and multidisciplinary team reviews.

This post would be suitable for any trainee who has completed MRCP or has achieved equivalent competencies. Previous experience in General Medicine and up to date certification for Adult Life Support training are essential. Previous experience of neurosciences would be advantageous.

Although these appointments are not accredited for training, the appointees will have the opportunity to participate in the educational and training programs at the PRUH and/or Denmark Hill sites, compliance with the Trust mandatory training is also essential. The Clinical fellow will be expected to attend and actively participate in departmental teaching and audit. There is a yearly appraisal system and the successful candidate should comply with GMC revalidation process.

The post holder will be expected to contribute and participate in the Departments ongoing clinical audit programmes, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. There are opportunities to further develop clinical skills and to attend and review patients in a weekly MDT Rehabilitation Clinic, Specialist Spasticity clinic and intrathecal Baclofen Clinic. The post holder also has a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

The post holder will be expected to engage in continual professional development. Study leave may be requested in accordance with the Trusts Policy for Continuing Medical Education. Annual leave may be taken in accordance with the Trusts Guidelines on Leave Arrangements for Medical and Dental Staff. To ensure the smooth running of the service, the post holder will ensure that, in conjunction with colleagues, adequate arrangements are made to cover planned and unplanned absences.
