An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Physiologist to join our team to provide lung function, sleep diagnosis and treatment, bronchoscopy and pleural intervention services at Kings College Hospital (Denmark Hill)
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be involved in the provision of a respiratory physiology service, performing a wide range of pulmonary function tests and sleep investigations, including supporting the community spirometry service that is hosted in local GP surgeries. Uniquely the Respiratory Physiologists are also responsible for the Trusts' Bronchoscopy and pleural intervention services, assisting throughout the procedure and giving support and care to the patients before, during and after the bronchoscopy.
The post holder will also be involved in the initiation and follow-up of CPAP treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.
We are looking for a self-motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills who enjoys working as part of a team. They must have the ability to remain calm under pressure but be fast and accurate in their work.
The post holder will require BSC (Hons) Healthcare Science (Respiratory & Sleep)/ BSc Clinical Physiology or equivalent. ARTP Part 1 and Part 2 are desirable, and the successful candidate should be willing to register with RCCP/AHCS when eligible.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will be involved in;
Lung Function
- The provision of a range of respiratory function tests for Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust , both at Denmark Hill and in the local community spirometry sites.
- Involvement in the development and evaluation of new tests and techniques and evaluation of the performance of new equipment.
- The preparation of test reports. Responsibility for the accuracy of results.
- Responsibility for the routine maintenance, calibration and quality control of all laboratory equipment. The reporting of equipment faults to more senior physiology staff.
Bronchsoscopy and Pleural Intervention
- Assisting with the provision of bronchscopy and pleural intervention services for Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
- Care and support of patients and relatives before, during and after the procedure.
- Responsibility for the maintenance of resuscitation equipment and patient monitors.
- Knowledge of and involvement in emergency procedures such as resuscitation and control of bleeding.
- Responsibility for the correct handling, labelling and transport of specimens collected during bronchoscopy bronchial washings, brushings and biopsies.
- Responsibility for adherence to local infection control policies within the bronchoscopy suite.
Sleep Investigation
- Performing outpatient diagnostic sleep studies.
- Responsibility for the tracking and return of equipment loaned for sleep studies
- Involvement in the uploading, interpretation and writing of reports for overnight oximetry sleep studies.
Treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing
CPAP
- Initiation of the correct treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea with CPAP. Titration of the correct CPAP pressure to eliminate symptoms, and monitoring their progress.
- Mask fitting and maintenance of equipment for patients requiring CPAP treatment.
- Responsibility for the administration of the CPAP service, including the writing of clinical letters and monitoring of activity.
- Annual follow up of patients to ensure that optimal CPAP treatment is maintained.
Training an Supervision
- Supervision and assisting in the training of students on the Practitioner Training programme.
- Supervision and training for Assistant Respiratory Physiology staff
Administration and General Duties
- Stock control of laboratory consumables.
- Maintenance of cardiac arrest trolleys within the department.
