Job summary

The post holder is a member of a multidisciplinary team developing the use of human islet transplantation and islet cell research. The person will be based at two locations the James Black Centre of King's College London and the Human Cell Isolation Unit at King's College Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibility of the post holder is to assist in the isolation of human islets to GMP standards for clinical and research uses.

The duties will include maintaining supplies of reagents and necessary equipment.

  1. Assist in the isolation of human pancreatic islets of Langerhans for clinical cell transplantation and for research.
  2. Share the responsibility for the day-to-day environmental monitoring of air pressures and microbiological contamination testing as required for the licensed laboratory by HTA Authority.
  3. Responsible for provision of sterile reagents and equipment for isolation of human islet cells in the Cell Isolation Unit.
  4. Responsible for maintaining supplies of consumables required for islet cell isolation and looking after the stock reagents for human islet isolation.

The Kings Cell Isolation Unit was established in 2001 to prepare human cells from donor organs under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions for clinical use. It is a joint facility shared by Bone marrow transplantation, Virus-mediated immunological therapy group, the Hepatocyte Biology and Transplantation Group and Islet Transplantation group of Kings College Hospital. This unit is a licensed Cell Isolation laboratory by Human Tissue Act Authorities to produce human tissue for clinical use and research. The lab also processes pancreases removed for the purpose of islet auto transplantation.
