Job summary
There is an opportunity to join a great team at one of the leading teaching hospitals in the country, King's College Hospital. King's College Hospital is a busy tertiary referral hospital offering emergency and trauma care and the post holder will be required to participate in the emergency surgery rota and also be part of the Major Trauma firm looking after patients admitted to King's Trauma Centre. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further develop existing care pathways in emergency general surgery, and Bariatric surgery. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department, including supporting the Emergency Surgical Service, while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
This a substantive post will have a 10 PA job plan.
Applicants are expected to be on the GMC Specialist Register. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.
Main duties of the job
The post will be based at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill site as well as the Princess Royal University Hospital site. The proposed Job Plan is attached, and there may be future opportunities for elective work at the other sites. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. The
On-Call commitment is for a 1:12 rota which is classed as Category A. On call cover includes both the general surgery emergency, and trauma. King's College Hospital is a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre.
The post holder will be expected to provide care of Upper Gastrointestinal (benign) and Bariatric patients with expertise in diagnosis, assessment, and management of common and complex bariatric and upper GI conditions, including pancreatitis. He or she should be a competent and experienced laparoscopic surgeon, both in emergency, elective, and ambulatory surgery setting. They will be able to confidently perform emergency cholecystectomy, manage benign biliary diseases, and focus on pathways and management for care of acute pancreatitis.

Job responsibilities
1. Work together with the other consultant surgeons to provide a service for general surgery patients, particularly Upper GI and Bariatric surgery. This includes all aspects of benign upper GI work including benign biliary surgery, gastro-oesophageal surgery, and all aspects of bariatric surgery including complex primary and revisional bariatric surgery and bariatric emergencies. The post holder also needs to be able to perform emergency general surgery, including colectomies as required. One remit of the post is to focus on streamlining and developing efficient pathways for acute pancreatitis patients through general surgery. To manage the gallstone pancreatitis patients and be the link person with HPB.
- Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- The post holder is expected to attend weekly Bariatric MDT meetings, Trauma, and governance meetings, and share in and support the academic and organisational activities of the Clinical Academic Group (CAG) across Kings Health Partners.
- Shared responsibility with the other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the upper GI and bariatric unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused on these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post- qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
