Job summary

The neonatal team at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust currently consists of 17 consultants working across the two sites (Denmark Hill NICU and Princess Royal SCBU). These posts are developed within the strategy to transform the PRUH SCBU to LNU status and to harmonise neonatal services on both sites. The post holder will work within a large multidisciplinary team providing and further developing care for newborns within the Neonatal Services at PRUH site.

The LNU at PRUH currently has 12 cots (with 4 HDU and 8 SCBU) but with ample room for expansion. PRUH has been recently approved for re-designation to LNU and activity is being phased in currently.

The neonatal unit at King's is a world renowned, tertiary level, neonatal intensive care unit. The unit specialises in caring for premature infants as well as those born and referred with a variety of antenatally diagnosed complex surgical problems. Its subspecialties include respiratory medicine, short gut, nutrition, neurosurgery, neurology, thoracic and abdominal as well as ophthalmic surgery. The unit has an international reputation for its research which is directed by Professor Anne Greenough and there is much collaboration with Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital under the auspices of King's Health Partners.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based mainly at PRUH with attending weeks at Denmark Hill NICU and non-resident on call at PRUH site. Attending weeks will be mainly based at PRUH site and clinics and other activities will also take place at PRUH site. The proposed Job Plan is attached.

Following work undertaken to transform the way clinical care is delivered at King's, all new consultant appointments will comprise 1.5 SPAs. One SPA is for activities relevant for appraisal and revalidation. 0.5 SPA is for particular interests such as Teaching and management. The outputs of the 0.5 SPA will be reviewed by the Clinical Lead at 12-18 months.

Office space and secretarial support will be provided at both sites. The post-holder will be expected to join the existing team of neonatologists and share clinical responsibilities. These posts will ensure that the consultants will be able to provide a 2 in 6 weeks attending commitment during weekday normal working hours to the LNU/NICU, antenatal and postnatal wards. One consultant will be "on" for the LNU while attending at PRUH. When not "on" for attending weeks, time will be devoted to outpatient clinics, administration, teaching, clinical governance and other activities related to clinical care. The on call non-resident consultant team will provide cover until 9.30 pm on weekdays and until 5:30 pm on weekends. Overnight cover will be led in house by the registrars/SCF and ST1/ JCF.
