Job summary
We are looking for dynamic individuals to join King's as Acute Consultant Physicians.
The successful candidates will join and support a friendly and engaged team of 12, with responsibility for the immediate medical care of patients, who establish early plans for future management through ambulatory emergency care or hot clinics, admission to our AMUs or specialist clinics. The Emergency Care Improvement Support Team (ECIST) recently visited our same day emergency care unit (SDEC) and highly commended the unit for its good practice. (ECIST) is a clinically led national NHS team designed by clinicians to help health and care systems deliver high quality emergency care. You will also work closely with our colleagues from Emergency Medicine and other medical sub-specialties and with primary care and community services.
The post will include the requirement to contribute to the out-of-hours on call rota and deliver seven-day care. We are an expanding and evolving service, join us and help develop a great clinical, academic and management team.
Main duties of the job
This post will provide support to the Modernising Medicine transformation project, which will build upon areas of good practice at King's and drawing on innovative practices at a regional and a national level. The appointee will be joining an expanding team of multidisciplinary professionals to support senior clinical decision-making throughout our medical pathway. The transformational context of this role presents a unique opportunity to co-design and deliver a best practice in acute and general patient care delivery.
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust's sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:
- The provision of a first-class clinical service

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Together with the other Acute and General Internal Medicine Consultants, to provide a service for Acute and General Medicine. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
- Shared responsibility with the other Acute Medicine and contributing GIM Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for medicine on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Professional Development and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for out-patient and/ or ambulatory clinic commitments as agreed with the Care Groups management team.
- To contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- To contribute to the Audit Programme, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from deaths.
- To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
- To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan.
- To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
