The Diabetes and Endocrinology Department at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Consultant to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new team, the service has already successfully recruited to 4 consultant posts.

This is a new permanent post and there is an opportunity to develop an interest in other areas of diabetes and endocrinology depending on interest and experience. We are flexible so please contact us to discuss any details prior to interview

The PRUH and Orpington Hospital are based in Locksbottom and Orpington. These are highly sought-after locations due to its close proximity to its good primary and secondary schools. Bromley also has nationally recognised grammar schools.The thriving town centre of Bromley with retail, entertainment, gyms, restaurants, cafes and bars means that many staff live in the local area, enhancing the community spirit within the hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to support and further develop the Diabetes & Endocrine department at the PRUH and to provide senior decision making to ensure optimal and early review of patients. The appointee will work in collaboration with the other Diabetes & Endocrine consultant, junior doctors and Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Dietitians, Podiatrists and Pharmacist in the department and Trust.

Delivering outpatient and inpatient Diabetes & Endocrine services to the local population of Bromley and surrounding areas.

Specific duties will include rotational cover for 20 bed General Medicine ward, Endocrine outpatient clinics, Diabetic Foot inpatients and outpatients, pregnancy and transition clinics and Inpatient and outpatient diabetes.

The appointed Consultant will join Kings College Hospital, PRUH and South Sites at an exciting phase within our Diabetes and Endocrine Service. As well as providing inpatient support and outpatient clinics there is opportunity for service developments within the each of the sub specialties within the service. The role will also support general inpatient medicine at the PRUH.

The job plan in the job description is an indicative example of a job plan. A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder soon after the commencement date. The Job Plan, a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives, will be reviewed periodically. Annual consultant appraisals will be carried out as part of the National Revalidation process.

  1. Together with the other members to provide a service for general medicine and the diabetes and endocrinology departments. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other specialities for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
  6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
  7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
  8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
  9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
  12. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
  14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
