Job summary
Applicants are invited for the post of Consultant General Paediatrician with a Special interest in Paediatric Oncology (POSCU) and Haematology at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London. This is a substantive full time post to support the Enhanced Level B POSCU.
We are looking for a highly motivated and flexible individual to join our friendly team in delivering a high quality service. The successful applicant will work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for children/young people with cancer and haematological disorders. The successful applicant will have broad general paediatric experience and at least one year of Paediatric Haemato-oncology experience in either a Primary Treatment Centre or a POSCU.
The Trust provides a full range of local hospital services across its different sites, and specialist services from King's College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill in Camberwell and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in the London Borough of Bromley.
The Trust is recognised internationally for its work in liver disease and transplantation, neurosciences, cardiac, haemato-oncology, fetal medicine, stroke, major trauma, and Emergency Department.
King's is a key partner in one of London's foremost Academic Health Science Centres, King's Health Partners (KHP).
Main duties of the job
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust's sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Together with the paediatric haematologists and other colleagues, to provide a service for POSCU and paediatric haematology patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
- Shared responsibility for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan, whilst lead clinician. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
- Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
- Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
- Clinical Leadership whilst lead clinician for the POSCU, to promote, lead and deliver clinical care to Children and Young People with cancer in paedatiric services at Kings.
- To work closely and collaboratively with the members of the POSCU MDT, the paediatric haematology team and ward paediatric medical and nursing teams, and to liaise directly with the paediatric oncology team at the PTCs and community services when necessary
- The postholder will be a member of the CCLG (Childrens Cancer and Leukaemia Group).
- If appointed, whilst Lead for Chemotherapy services for the POSCU, the postholder will attend and report to the Trust Chemotherapy Governance Board, submit applications for new chemotherapy regimens and urgent treatment as required, and keeping the list of approved regimens up to date.
- To be on the Chemotherapy Register of those authorised to prescribe Systemic Anticancer (SACT) chemotherapy for POSCU patients, and to liaise with the senior paediatric pharmacist, cytotoxic pharmicst and POSCU CNSs to coordinate care and ensure correct practive, adhering to the Trusts chemotherapy governance polcy.
- Participate in the paediatric haematology ward attending rota 1 in 4, (consultant of the week) seeing the POSCU and paediatric haematology inpatients, new admissions and leading the ward rounds, ensuring handover to paediatric colleagues for evenings and weekends.
- Undertake outpatients for POSCU patients (chemotherapy attendances, review and long term follow up) and also paediatric haematology (non-malignant) clinic on weeks when not scheduled to attend the ward inpatients.
- Attend the POSCU MDMs (clinical meeting alternate weeks, psychosocial MDM and business/teaching/audit once a month each), ensuring that patients are discussed. To convene an Annual Operational Policy Meeting to update and agree new polices.
- Participate in the management and training of the members of the POSCU MDT, including those being recruited to new roles.
- Whilst holding the lead clinician post, the post holder will attend the Trust Cancer Board to represent the POSCU, the Child Health Governance committee as necessary, providing reports and data (KPIs) as requested. They will also attend external meetings organised by the ODNs for Cancer (RM Partners and North Thames) and the the Shared Care study days arranged by the PTCs. Documents and polices (Supportive Care Guidelines, Referral Guidelines, Clinical Management Guidelines) produced and updated by the PTCs and agreed by the network will be submitted by the lead clinician for inclusion in the Kings intranet to be available to other staff looking after POSCU patients.
- To work towards the implementation of EPIC and electronic chemotherapy prescribing for POSCU patients, and submission of SACT data as required.
- Participate in the RMH annual audit of critical care admissions of POSCU patients at Kings.
- To prepare and contribute to internal self-assessments or external peer review of the POSCU service as required to address the service specificaiton.
- To participate in oncology teaching and training for the paediatric medical and nursing team as well as POSCU MDT members.

- In discussion with the PTCS, to support adoption of relevant new paediatric oncology chemotherapy trials at Kings, to ensure patients have access to these.
