Kings College Hospital is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual for Highly Specialist Practitioner Psychologist role based in the Department of Rheumatology at Denmark Hill. The Department provides highly specialist services within the care group of non-acute specialty medicine. The clinical staff includes 9 Consultant Rheumatologists, 3 Specialist Registrars, 2 Clinical Fellows, a Band 8a rheumatology matron and 4 specialist nurses. The Department of Rheumatology is involved in treating a wide range of inflammatory conditions. There are also specialist clinics in early inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, vasculitis and myositis. The majority of the clinical work is outpatient based and there are ward rounds for review of inpatients.

The successful candidate will join the Rheumatology Multi-Disciplinary Team to provide psychological expertise and fulfil the key aspects of the role outlined in the job description. They will work alongside a friendly and innovative group of psychologists and psychotherapists with different medical specialties.

Please note: This role requires someone who is a qualified psychologist with HCPC registration.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a highly specialist integrated psychological support service for rheumatology patients which includes specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
  • To support and enable other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish, by helping to create a psychologically safe environment.
  • To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate, functioning as a lead specialist in the psychological aspects of the care and treatment of adult rheumatology patients.
  • To undertake service evaluation, audit, research and policy development.

  • To provide highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations and to select and deliver evidence-based psychological treatments for rheumatology patients across KCH experiencing a range of psychological needs including adjustment difficulties, emotional distress in relation to their illness, depression, anxiety, poor treatment adherence and issues related to life choices.

Contributing to team or service clinical functioning

  • To contribute to the delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.
  • To be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.

Management and supervision

  • To be responsible for the allocation and/or clinical supervision of the work of any trainee or assistant psychologists attached to the service with support from a more senior psychologist.
  • To supervise any trainee applied psychologists within own area of specialism.
  • To provide supervision for the psychological work of other multi-disciplinary staff as appropriate.

Teaching and Training

  • To undertake occasional teaching and training of pre and post- qualification psychologists and specialized training to other professions as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills base within the rheumatology service by maintaining an active awareness of current developments in psychology and rheumatology, and by implementing knowledge gained in practice.
