Senior Clinical Fellow (MT04 or MT05) in Paediatric Gastroenterology

Full-time 40 hours per week

Until September 2023

Applications are invited for a middle grade / clinical fellow post (Equivalent to ST4+) based at the Paediatric Liver, GI and Nutrition centre at King's College Hospital to provide efficient, patient centred care. The successful candidate will cover the Paediatric Gastroenterology service during the daytime

Main duties of the job

To provide middle grade cover to the Paediatric Gastroenterology services at Paediatric Liver, GI and Nutrition centre. The post will provide experience in managing a variety of GI conditions (at a tertiary level) such as inflammatory bowel disease, short gut syndrome, intestinal failure, enteral and parenteral nutrition, pancreatic & liver diseases in addition to managing more common pediatric GI complaints such as gastro esophageal reflux, constipation, diarrhea and feeding problems. There are specialist clinics for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Celiac Disease, feeding problems, constipation and allergy. King's College Hospital serves as a national referral hospital for many specialties including Paediatric Hepatology and Bowel transplantation

Duties

Clinical:

To work with other middle grade performing day-to day care of the Gastroenterology patients in Rays of Sunshine Ward and/or Day Case Unit.

To maintain high quality communication both spoken and written with patients, parents, GPs and referring consultants

To attend endoscopy sessions (3 lists per week, under GA), Gastroenterology outpatient clinics (4 clinics per week) and also look after Gastroenterology patients who attends Phillip Isaac Day Case unit for hydrogen breath tests, Urea breath tests, impedance pH study, food challenge, pancreatic function tests, Video capsule enteroscopy and mono clonal antibody infusions. Opportunities are available to get experience in therapeutic endoscopic procedures including bleeding control (variceal banding, injection, clips etc), RNY loop enteroscopy & balloon enteroscopy, polypectomy, PEG and stricture dilation.

Attendance on consultant led ward rounds and MDT meetings and opportunity to attend adult gastroenterology meeting. Opportunities to attend specialist clinics such us joint GI/Liver clinic, Short Gut clinic, Gastro/Allergy clinic, Feeding clinic, coeliac clinic, adolescent transition clinic endoscopy review clinic and tertiary level constipation clinic.

Teaching:

Assistance in conjunction with specialist registrars/consultants with the teaching of undergraduate medical students.

Research/Audit:

Involvement in the research interests of the department and audit will be encouraged.

The objectives of the post include:

  1. Developing & understanding of all aspects of assessment and management of Gastrointestinal, Nutritional, Pancreatic and liver problems in children at tertiary level
  2. Developing diagnostic skills in upper, lower endoscopy and enteroscopy in children
  3. Developing endoscopic therapeutic skills in basic interventional procedures such as polypectomy
  4. Developing administrative skills in dealing with colleagues in respect to appropriate service cover
  5. Opportunity to attend appropriate courses and research
