Job summary
We are seeking a full time (or part time), enthusiastic and conscientious Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry to join the team at King's Dental Hospital, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder(s) depending on the post will also work in Community clinics across South London.
The successful candidates should have excellent team-working qualities and will be expected to play an active role in the development, provision and delivery of oral health care to a wide range of patients who require paediatric dentistry in both the hospital and community settings in South London. Together with departmental colleagues you will be expected to forge links with other departments within the Trust and with external agencies to develop appropriate services for patients with complex needs. In addition, you will be required to make an active contribution to the Department whilst also having a commitment to teaching and training of junior staff. You will also be expected to contribute to continuing education, clinical governance, audit and research. You must have full registration with the General Dental Council and be eligible for appointment as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry by being on the Specialist list in Paediatric Dentistry and applicants should have completed the relevant post-CCST training in Paediatric Dentistry or be within 6 months of completion by time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical duties include outpatient care and GA treatment lists. The post holder will participate in clinical supervision, support and teaching the junior staff and hygienists. In addition, the further development of links with the community services to help provide a specialised network for Paediatric patients across South London.
Specific Clinical Duties
- To provide comprehensive paediatric dental care for appropriate patients, including treatment under local anaesthesia, inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia.
- Treatment planning within the multidisciplinary teams.
- Participation in governance across the different sites
- Support postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
- Clinical supervision of junior members of the team
- Attainment of the necessary continuing dental education and professional development criteria.
- Assessment and triage of new patient referral letters
- Clinical administration - letters and emails

- Together with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
- Shared responsibility with other colleagues and responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
