Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Trust Doctor in Paediatrics (ST1/2 or Equivalent)

The closing date is 24 March 2026

Job summary

Working Full time: 40 hours per week

We are pleased to offer a fixed term 6 month post for a Trust Doctor in Paediatrics.

The successful candidate will join a comprehensive team of paediatric nurses, doctors and allied health professionals. They will be expected to take a full part in the daily running of the department. This will include paediatric ward rounds, neonatal unit duties, postnatal ward (including NIPE examinations) and clerking new patients on the CAU (Children's Assessment Unit). This is a full time post, with the expectation that additional shifts will be available from time to time. It is hoped that the successful candidate will be able to fill these shifts at short notice on most occasions. The post offers the opportunity to develop skills and experience in the full breadth of general paediatrics. It would be highly suitable for a doctor preparing to apply for a post in paediatric specialty training in the near future. The post would also suit a doctor looking towards a career in specialties allied to paediatrics, such as general practice or emergency medicine.

Main duties of the job

Maternity and Neonatal: routine cover on the postnatal wards, labour suite and the neonatal unit. Routine neonatal examinations on the majority of infants born in the hospital. They are required to attend all 'at risk' deliveries. There are opportunities for the junior paediatric staff to attend follow up baby clinics which are held twice weekly in the paediatric outpatient department.

Paediatric Medical Ward and Assessment Unit: Junior paediatric staff provide cover for the admission and assessment of all acute paediatric admissions and throughout any inpatient episode. The majority of these admissions will be from GP referrals, but also from the Emergency Medicine Department as well as from the Paediatric Outpatient Department. There are currently four advanced paediatric nurse practitioners in post supporting the paediatric unit.
