Job summary

Working Full Time: 37.5 Hours Per Week

The post holder will support the team in delivering outstanding patient care and maintaining departmental targets, including the 4 hour standard and ambulance handover. The post holder will be responsible for assisting the Senior team of the Emergency Department in facilitating patient flow, liaising with specialty teams, transport services and hospital coordinators to ensure effective patient management.

The post holder will be required to problem solve issues on a minute by minute basis using organizational and forward thinking skills. They will communicate effectively with all levels of staff, working as part of a wider team in the achievement of the ED patient care and service objectives.The post holder will need to remain calm under pressure and prioritize their workload as an essential part of the role

Main duties of the job

1. Book in patients in a timely manner using the Trust's Cerner system to meet current department triage times. These patients will arrive via a variety of presentations including routine ambulance arrivals, self-presentations, GP referrals, ward referrals, ambulance standbys as well as traumatic ambulance calls.

2. Deal with enquiries of a non-clinical / clinical nature from wards, departments, medical staff, external organisations and members of the public, relating to the admission/transfer and discharge of patients. The post holder will have a positive, helpful manner and they will be required to use tact or persuasive skills to overcome any barriers to understanding when providing advice and information.

3. Raise all patient bed requests on the Hospital Teletracking system making sure the right bed is booked in a timely manner, paying particular attention to the bed required, isolation type and any other requests that might be required making them visible on Teletracking. Update Cerner to reflect this including Emergency Department ready and Decision to admit times where appropriate

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
