Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate, motivated individual to lead our dedicated surgical nursing team on Ward 5. This role requires an enthusiastic and professional nurse with a strong interest and experience in surgical nursing.

Ward 5/STU/MIS and SDCU form a general surgical unit comprising three areas: a 13-bed inpatient ward, 11 day-case beds, and a Surgical Treatment Unit with an infusion suite (4 chairs). The service supports a wide range of surgical specialties including major bowel surgery, breast and gynaecology, ophthalmology, urology and ENT.

We are seeking a nurse ready to progress their career, demonstrating effective leadership, management skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-focused care. You should show evidence of developing leadership, advanced clinical skills, and involvement in service improvement.

You will work closely with the Matron to promote a welcoming, supportive culture that values staff involvement and continuous improvement. The post holder will take day-to-day clinical and operational responsibility for the unit, ensuring high standards of care and effective performance management within the team.

Hours per week: 37.5

The Ward Manager/Charge Nurse in Ward 5, specialising General Surgery, holds overall responsibility for managing care delivery in line with Trust policies and procedures. Ward Manager/Charge Nurse has overall management responsibility for ensuring high-quality care delivery within the ward, adhering to Trust policies and procedures. Their role involves providing senior leadership to the nursing team, facilitating regular supervision and appraisals and managing resources efficiently. They also play a key role in coordinating multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth communication and continuity of care across services.

Additionally, the Ward Manager/Charge Nurse is expected to maintain clinical standards in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct. They are to ensure that patient care is at the heart of service delivery and are a visible, supportive figure to staff, patients, and visitors within the clinical environment.
