Job summary

The AKI / Sepsis Specialist Nurse role is an exciting new role at the Trust, and has been developed to help us further develop the care that we provide to patients with Acute Kidney Injury and Sepsis.

The successful candidate will be expected to practice at an expert level, acting as a knowledgeable resource to staff and ensuring that practices are delivered to the highest standard and support a reduction in AKI and Sepsis rates within the Trust.. They will also promote and encourage innovative clinical practice to support a culture of excellence within clinical teams.

The AKI / Sepsis Specialist Nurse will be involved in the development and implementation of policies aligned with national and local strategies and policy drivers and will support audit against these policies to drive quality improvement in practice.

Hours per week: 22.50

Main duties of the job

A competent health care professional, who in conjunction with the Deputy Chief Nurse and Deputy Medical Director:

  • Provides leadership and demonstrates expert knowledge and high standards of clinical practice, to improve the management of patients with AKI and Sepsis.
  • Plans and delivers AKI and Sepsis education to all members of staff who may be involved in the care of patients with these conditions.
  • Leads clinical audits to improve practice to ensure effective evidence-based practice.
  • Influencing patient care for the prevention, detection and management of AKI and Sepsis across the Trust, acting as a point of contact in an advisory role on clinical matters that affect service provision, and taking appropriate action to resolve issues as they occur and involving and informing relevant personnel when necessary.
  • Works collaboratively with Oncology Specialist Nurses to support improvements in management of neutropenic sepsis.
  • Works collaboratively with the Critical Care Outreach team, Medical, and Nursing teams to support the delivery of outstanding patient care to patients with Acute Kidney Injury and Sepsis.
  • Works in partnership with clinical teams to empower staff to understand the effects of sepsis and the importance of recognising the clinical signs of deterioration and enhance the skills in interpreting and acting upon NEWS2 scores.
