Job summary
The aim of the Cheshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is to reduce the risk of sight loss amongst people with diabetes by inviting all eligible people for screening to ensure the early detection and appropriate monitoring/ treatment of diabetic retinopathy. The post holder will independently run diabetic eye screening clinics across Cheshire and when not assigned to a screening clinic, contact patients to encourage attendance.
We are looking to recruit a Diabetic Eye Screener / Patient Liaison Officer who is passionate about patient care and improving patient services.
The successful applicant should be a confident, friendly and conscientious individual who is happy to travel to our screening sites and independently run diabetic eye screening clinics across Cheshire. When the post holder is not running a screening clinic, we would like them to contact patients who have not attended a diabetic eye screening appointment in order to improve uptake.
Please note, if you are already a qualified diabetic eye screener, you will commence as a Band 3. If you are not a qualified diabetic eye screener, you will commence as a Band 2 and will be supported to complete the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners.We welcome applications from unqualified applicants.
We can either base the successful applicant at Alsager Health Centre or The Fountains in Chester, dependent on home address. We pay travel expenses and account for travel time to each of our venues.
Hours per week: 37.5
Main duties of the job
- Travel to the screening location and arrive punctually to start clinic.
- Establish a rapport with patients and explain the diabetic eye screening process.
- Complete a basic visual acuity test.
- Administer eye drops.
- Operate a retinal camera to take retinal images.
- Recognise signs of Diabetic Retinopathy to triage images into the correct grading queue.
- Problem solve should any issues arise.
- Call patients to encourage attendance
The post holder will need to be IT literate and able to use our bespoke software, Optomize. The successful applicant must have an excellent telephone manner and be able to provide information to a wide range of people in a clear, courteous and professional manner. It would be advantageous to have an understanding of diabetes and NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programmes.
