Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Boston Pilgrim Hospital for a Bank Phlebotomist post, based in the Blood Sciences Pathology Department.

This is an important role, supporting the Pathology Department. Experience of phlebotomy is essential and applicants should be able to demonstrate current skills.

The candidate should be literate and numerate, GCSE Grade C or above in mathematics and English would be an advantage as would previous laboratory or health care experience and familiarity with medical terminology.

This post will be Monday - Friday

The routine hours for this post will be spread within core hours (08:30 - 17:00)

There is the opportunity to support the weekend rota pro-rata

Main duties of the job

Venepuncture

  • The collection of blood samples from patients through venepuncture (phlebotomy) in an Outpatient (clinic) facility or as Inpatients including collection from the acute wards. All samples should be collected as per Trust guidelines.
  • Collection of blood from the arm, In order to achieve good quality samples. Judgment will be required in choosing the correct vein from which to draw blood.
  • Following suitable experience and additional training the collection of blood from the back of the hand.
  • Awareness of the specific requirements for some tests e.g. fasting, resting, and the performance of multiple timed collections e.g. Glucose and Lactose tolerance tests.
  • Attention to detail is required in the correct identification of patient, using full name and date of birth, and wrist bands for inpatients. Attention to detail is also required in ensuring that samples are drawn in the correct order for optimal analysis.
  • All samples must be legibly labelled by hand in accordance with the Trust labelling policy.
  • All samples must be delivered to the laboratory in a timely manner.
  • Answer phone and booking appointment using MS Bookings

Full training in these roles will be given through the use of in-house competency assessments.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is encouraged and the department has an active CPD schedule.
