Therapy Team Leader - Acute Respiratory Team

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 7 Physiotherapist to lead the Acute Respiratory Physiotherapy service within the acute hospital setting. The post-holder will provide expert respiratory physiotherapy assessment and intervention for patients with complex and deteriorating respiratory conditions, while leading and supporting a dynamic multidisciplinary therapy team.

You will combine advanced clinical practice with strong leadership, supervising and developing junior staff and students, contributing to service development, and working closely with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. This role includes responsibility for clinical governance, education, and participation in weekend/on-call rotas as required.

Main duties of the job

Provide advanced specialist respiratory physiotherapy assessment and treatment for patients with acute, complex and deteriorating respiratory conditions across the acute hospital setting. Lead the day-to-day delivery of the acute respiratory physiotherapy service, ensuring safe, effective and evidence-based patient care. Act as a clinical expert resource for respiratory physiotherapy, supporting clinical decision-making, escalation and risk management. Line manage, supervise and support Band 5/6 physiotherapists, therapy support staff and students, including appraisal, clinical supervision and professional development. Coordinate staffing, rotas and workload allocation to ensure service continuity and responsiveness. Work collaboratively with respiratory consultants, medical teams, nursing staff and MDT colleagues to support integrated care and patient flow. Contribute to service development, quality improvement projects, audit and implementation of national and local guidance. Support clinical governance, incident reporting and learning, ensuring compliance with professional, organisational and HCPC/CSP standards. Provide education and training to therapy staff and the wider MDT in respiratory physiotherapy practice. Participate in weekend, on-call and escalation rotas as required.
