Job Summary

The Vascular Access Nurse Assistant is a member of the Vascular Access Team (VAN). The VAN team are responsible for ensuring safe and effective vascular access for adult patients with a wide range of acute, chronic and palliative conditions.

Delegated work and duties will be assigned and carried out under the direct and indirect supervision of a Vascular Access Nurse Specialist, in accordance with the competencies laid down for NVQ Level 3. Where additional skills training is identified as required in the job description the post holder will not undertake those duties until training has been undertaken (except as part of the supervised learning experience).

Assist the Vascular Access Nurse Specialist in a range of patient care duties. Provide patient care according to the individual patient's clinical management plan associated with the need for vascular device insertions and/or ongoing management of such devices.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Vascular Access Nurse Specialist in the delivery of a clinically effective and efficient for all adult clinical areas in the hospital.

To assist the Vascular Access Nurse Specialist with the development delivery and promotion training for clinical staff responsible for the care of vascular access devices.

To assist the Vascular Access Nurse Specialist with maximal barrier precaution surgical procedures including insertion of peripherally inserted central venous catheters, midline catheters and tunnelled central venous devices.

To assist the Vascular Access Nurse Specialist with ensuring clinical areas have appropriate resources to effectively care for patients with vascular access devices.
