Job summary
The post holder will extract clinical information from case notes and/or other source documentation. They will need to translate diagnostic and procedural statements into alphanumeric codes, according to World Health Organisation and NHS Digital guidelines and enter these into the 3M Medicode Coding System in a timely and accurate manner.
The successful candidate will have significant clinical coding experience using the ICD10 and OPCS-4 classifications and in addition, have attained the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC). The post holder should be able to demonstrate a high level of communication skills, excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure to meet deadlines.
The role requires the accurate analysis, interpretation and extraction of relevant clinical information and data (including complex conditions and treatments) from a variety of sources including discharge summaries, medical notes, radiology, pathology, and other clinical information systems.
They will also be expected to act as mentor to all other Clinical Coders within the department.
Main duties of the job
- Communication & relationship skills
- Must have the ability to explain and interpret subject matter within Clinical Coding.
- Must be able to develop effective working relationships with other colleagues and provide advice and support on complex rules relating to Clinical Coding
- Develop, foster and maintain effective relationships both internal and external to the trust.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with Medical, Clinical and Administrative Staff
- Liaise with Medical Records staff, Secretaries and Ward Staff to locate and collate any missing documentation required for outstanding coding,
- Be responsible for identifying any problems which arise within the Clinical Coding specialities, recommending, discussing and implementing any enhancements that have been highlighted with the help of the Clinical Coding Site Leader
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information
- Knowledge, Training and Experience
- Hold ACC status or awaiting results.
- Expected to attend regular Refresher course and continually maintain and refresh knowledge of;
- Rules and conventions of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) and OPCS Classification of Interventions and Procedures (OPCS-4)
