The post would suit a good team player dedicated to high quality patient care. The opportunity exists to work in a non-hierarchical setting and offer a wide range of Emergency Medicine procedures in this busy DGH.
The purpose of this post is to provide valuable additional Consultant input to the Trust's unscheduled care service. The Trust has recognised the need to provide extended hours of Consultant shop-floor cover at evening and weekends in order improve the quality and safety of unscheduled care to patients and has approved a Consultant expansion programme.
The Trust has been successful in securing up to £54.68m of new capital investment into our Urgent and Emergency Care services and has recently moved into 2 brand new Emergency Departments.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School (HYMS). This honorary appointment is in recognition of contribution to teaching and research and holders of honorary titles may request access to HYMS and University premises and facilities, systems, and library services.

Main duties of the job
The post could be filled on a full or part time basis. Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will still be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on an individual basis. Job share applicants are also welcome.
The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
- This will include all patients presenting to the Hospital with an acute presentation whether GP referred or self-referred
- To be the first point of contact with the patient
- To examine and treat patients on the shop floor of the Emergency Care Centre
- To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
- To provide on-call support out of hours during planned sessions. To attend the Department out of hours as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on-call
- To participate in observational medicine on the Acute Care Unit and to participate in decision making as appropriate with Acute Care Physicians and other General/Specialist Medical Physicians
There will be additional duties for Audit, Teaching, Management and any Strategic development in the department ( as agreed by the clinical lead)

Our Emergency Departments across the Trust sees over 150,000 new attendees per year, allowing for seasonal variation due to the close proximity of the seaside town of Cleethorpes.
Two brand new Emergency Department of over 2,300m2 have been built at both Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby and Scunthorpe General Hospital, becoming operational at the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023. These state of the art purpose built departments offer a much increased treatment room capacity for majors and minors, with the ability to flex as demand fluctuates, and will include an increased number of resus bays and equipment. New staff facilities have been designed with staff rest, shower and changing facilities and a new seminar training room.
The existing emergency department areas are not being fully refurbished and will become the Integrated Acute Assessment Units (IAAU), with seamless patient flow between the Emergency department and IAAU, offering the latest same day emergency care (SDEC) facilities to improve patient flow and capacity within the Emergency Department and the optimum patient experience.
The Consultant establishment has recently been increased with substantial investment resulting in 142 Pas per site. The appointments are based at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby and/or Scunthorpe General Hospital. This is part of the process to review the way in which unscheduled care is organised and delivered. Consultants will have any single site or cross-site arrangements agreed through the job planning process.
New members of the team who join over the coming months will get opportunity to influence and input into the new departments and the development of new patient pathways to ensure all our patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. The appointee will be expected to deliver high quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.
