Job summary

The Serology and Molecular Microbiology department at Scunthorpe Hospital, is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join the Microbiology senior team.

The laboratory is part of the Path Links pathology service network which is one of the most established pathology networks in the country.

The Serology/Molecular department offers a broad repertoire of diagnostic tests on cutting edge automated analytical equipment, such as the Roche cobas 5800, Diasorin Liaison XL, Cepheid GeneXpert and Qiagen QIAstat-Dx platforms.

As a network, we are constantly looking to develop the service. This allows for opportunities to develop new methods and procedures to benefit the patient pathway.

The Serology and Molecular advanced practitioner/deputy manager will work closely with the Microbiology managers and Consultant Microbiologists to support the overall laboratory management. So this post gives the opportunity for the successful candidate to be involved in a wider role within pathology and is an ideal opportunity to develop people and project management skills in a busy and modern department.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with members of the Microbiology Directorate to deliver a high quality, efficient and cost-effective Microbiology service.

You will work jointly with all parties to maintain and implement common policies and procedures.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic HCPC registered specialist biomedical scientists with at least two years' experience at Band 6 specialist BMS level to become part of our team in the Serology and Molecular department at Scunthorpe Hospital.

You will be required to have good communication skills and the ability to work under pressure. Previous experience of staff training is desirable as is experience of UKAS ISO:15189. The successful candidate must be capable of working independently.

  • Management of the Serology and Molecular Microbiology laboratory from a technical, personnel and quality management perspective
  • Project management and oversight of developments relating to Serology and Molecular Microbiology, including implementation of new methods and equipment and process changes to improve efficiency and patient safety
  • Ensure departmental compliance with UKAS ISO:150189 other relevant standards
  • Ensure incidents and errors are reported to relevant bodies and action plans are enacted to prevent recurrence and recorded on our quality management systems
  • Plan and oversee training and competency assessments for all staff working in the department
  • Work with the clinical team via the Microbiology Directorate meetings to develop Serology and Molecular services, ensure they meet user requirements and ensure quality standards are met
  • Work with colleagues across the Path Links directorate under the leadership of the Microbiology directorate operational manager to ensure standardised and efficient practices that meet and can evidence relevant quality standards are embedded in the department
  • Responsibility for quality control and external quality assurance
