Tracheostomy Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Planned Care Business Group: The Tracheostomy Clinical Nurse specialist (CNS) is a role within UHNM designed to support the implementation of a National Model of care agreed as part of the National Tracheostomy safety Project ,the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative. The Tracheostomy CNS will be required to work as part of the Tracheostomy Service Team and autonomously alongside the ENT consultant lead for Tracheostomies.

Main duties of the job

Undertake comprehensive clinical assessment of a patients condition.

Initiate and manage a clinical treatment plan

Undertake invasive interventions within the scope of practise

Provide professional leadership and support within a multi professional team

Work autonomously in nurse led Tracheostomy change outpatient clinics

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge across a range of subject areas relevant to the field of tracheostomy care

Critically analyse ,evaluate and synthesis different sources of information for the purpose of assessing and managing the care of the tracheostomy patient

Apply the principles of evidence based practise to the management of the tracheostomy patient

Understand and perform clinical audit

Deliver Trust wide education to staff in identified areas that provide Tracheostomy care to patients

Provide education and training to patients, relatives and community care teams to help support the safe discharge of tracheostomy patients

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years post registration experience with at least 1 year at band 6 in a leadership role
  • Holds the UHNM competent and advanced tracheostomy competency
  • Physical / health assessment

Education and qualifications

  • Current nursing registration with the NMC
  • Degree or evidence of degree level study
  • Mentorship course or equivalent

Desirable

  • Evidence of Masters / level 7 study
