Cytosponge Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job summary

To support and develop the management of UHNM's Cytosponge Service. To work with all members of the gastroenterology department to deliver cytosponge to patients who are on the symptomatic pathway with routine reflux and for patients who are already on the planned waiting list for Barrett's oesophagus surveillance.

The role of CNS is multifaceted this includes vetting and right patient selection, delivering triage clinic, delivering the Cytosponge capsule Clinic as well as results follow up

Main duties of the job

  • To support and develop the management of UHNM's Cytosponge Service, working with all members of the gastroenterology department to deliver cytosponge to patients who are on the symptomatic pathway with routine reflux and for patients who are already on the planned waiting list for Barrett's oesophagus surveillance.
  • The role of CNS is to triage patients to make sure they are clinically suitable to undergo capsule sponge procedures and that they meet the criteria.
  • To assess plan and deliver the Cytosponge care
  • Undertake capsule sponge procedures in accordance with hospital's standard operating procedures.
  • Clinic as well as results follow up and management.
  • The CNS will be expected to be an autonomous practitioner
  • To work with the NHS England's pilot team externally gathering information on up-to-date guidelines on Cytosponge, delivering information and support.
  • To enable patients to make informed consent and decisions about their care and understand the rationale of the investigations and treatment pathway.
  • Organize pre assessment clinics via the telephone and assess suitability of patients for Cytosponge
  • Along with your team you will need to manage the booking diary to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner

Job responsibilities

  • Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering specialised individualised and personalised direct patient care
  • To use advanced nursing skills in assessment and diagnosis and to coordinate the patient journey and diagnostic services within the unit and other key diagnostic services (especially radiology, and endoscopy).
  • To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust Policies and the national competency framework for endoscopy. To ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff
  • Ensuring patients are seen and have their procedure carried out within the agreed time frame, using existing resources to create a streamline service throughout the screening process.
  • You will be required to use the computer software to check in and review reports.
  • Organize necessary patient information leaflets and perform audits in relation to practice.
  • Be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication.
  • To be available for patients via phone and arrange admission/assessment if needed.
  • Stock checking of consumables and maintain Cytosponge System service agreement.
  • To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriatedocumentation.
  • To facilitate safe discharge planning ensuring safe information and follow up using specialist knowledge of endoscopic procedures, their risks and recovery.
  • When required, during less busy periods in the cytosponge service, your support in the endoscopy unit may be required. This will be agreed with the Endoscopy manager.
