Job summary

The Trust is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Performance) who can demonstrate a commitment to team working and shared responsibility for the achievement of the Trust's aims and objectives. The successful candidates will work as part of the Corporate Medical Leadership team and will contribute to strategic direction and decision making processes with an overriding requirement to act in the corporate interests of the Trust and its patients. The roles involve promoting high standards of clinical care and teamwork through the provision of professional leadership to all medical staff on standards of practice, performance and associated professional matters.

Supporting the Chief Medical Officer you will promote evidence based practice and ensure Trust systems and policies are effective. Main duties of the job

  • Take a lead role in the operational / clinical management of the Trust and to work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Nurse and Care Group Chairs to achieve this.
  • Work with the Chief Medical Officer and other Deputy Medical Directors to promote high standards of clinical care and team working through the provision of professional leadership to all Medical staff on standards of practice, performance and associated professional matters.
  • Work with the Chief Medical Officer to implement local, regional and national policy on medical specialties working closely with the Care Group Chairs in these areas.
  • Provide advice and support to Directors and Senior Managers and others across the Trust demonstrating a commitment to team working and shared responsibility for the achievement of the Trust's aims and objectives.
  • Deputise for the Chief Medical Officer for a range of pre-determined duties and during periods of absence.
  • Be a key member of the Chief Medical Officer team, flexing roles to address new challenges as they emerge, and engaging in developing Trust strategic direction from a clinical perspective.

Job responsibilities

Work with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nurse and other operational managers to manage operational clinical matters in Divisions.

Oversee the Medical/Surgical Divisions holding Divisional Chairs and management teams to account.

Deputise for the Chief Medical Officer at Trust wide performance review meetings as appropriate.

Undertake a lead role in reviewing locum, bank and agency bookings.

Support the Chief Medical Officer in setting objectives for Divisional Chairs.

Participate in weekly Chief Medical

Corporate Management

Support the Chief Medical Officer on a range of predetermined duties and during periods of absence.

Provide strategic advice and leadership on medical and clinical matters to the Trust Board, Executive Committee and other relevant committees. In particular, advising on clinical practice issues that have implications on the Trusts ability to meet obligations.

Take a lead role on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer for a portfolio of corporate responsibilities primarily relating to performance and operational clinical management in the Trust.

Attend Corporate Committees such as Performance & Finance Committee and LNC in the absence of the Chief Medical Officer.

Meet with the Chief Medical Officer and other deputies regularly to share information, discuss issues and provide support.

Clinical Governance / Quality

Ensure in conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nurse that the Trust operates appropriate clinical governance arrangements to provide the highest quality of safe care.

Encourage and promote an open organisational culture that learns from complaints incidents, learning and research to achieve high quality and best practice in service delivery.

Medical Leadership

Support the Chief Medical Officer to provide leadership to Divisional Chairs, Clinical Directors, Clinical Leads and other Clinicians/Managers.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of consultants and other Senior Medical staff, acting as Deputy for the Chief Medical Officer on AACs.

Support the Chief Medical Officer, working with the Chief People Officer, to maintain effective employee relations with the LNC and the BMA, participating as a member of the LNC when appropriate.

Support as required the Chief Medical Officer and AMD/Responsible Officer on the management of complex consultant performance issues, working closely with the Chief People Officer.

Be a key participant in the corporate processes of job planning medical productivity medical transformation and medical workforce planning.

Champion improvements in the Medical workforce supporting and encouraging innovation in clinical practice and the way services are delivered.

Work as a member of the Senior Medical Leadership team to enhance engagement with the Medical workforce, fostering good working relationships and providing open communication channels on all matters relating to medical staff.
