The Trauma Directorate are looking for a 12 month fixed term Junior Fellow to join them and support the Acute Rehabilitation and Trauma Unit.
The post holder will have a minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience completed to F3 level or equivalent, this post will be suitable for a surgeon or physician who is interested in the care of severely injured patients in a major trauma centre.
Applications will be invited from clinicians with an interest in Trauma from a range of relevant clinical background, from the ED, anaesthetics and critical care and surgical specialities. Successful candidates will gain expertise in the acute and ongoing management of critically ill and injured patients including Orthopaedics, Spines and Neurosurgery and will be allocated an educational supervisor from a relevant speciality to support their training and career progression. In addition, time will be allocated for personal development to pursue their own clinical interests and expertise.
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the Fellow on ARTU (ATF) will include provision of daily ward-based care including medical assessment and perioperative care as appropriate for the major trauma beds. The ATF will also be responsible for medical support to the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, providing the day-to-day care of inpatients and contributing to outcome measurement, communication, data collection and documentation. There will be a need to coordinate care between the trauma specialities and facilitate transfers from ARTU to speciality wards or referring hospitals. It is essential the ATF is a team player with excellent inter-personal skills.
The precise role within each team and the proportion of clinical time spent between major trauma specialties and specialist rehabilitation will vary. The ward is staffed with experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners, with whom the postholder will share and coordinate duties.
About us
UHNM Major Trauma service sits within the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate with specialist support from multiple surgical and other specialities on site. The successful candidate will work primarily on The Acute Rehabilitation and Trauma Unit (ARTU) an on-site, 27- bedded ward combining the hospitals and major trauma beds with acute specialised rehabilitation beds, pulling patients from intensive care or direct from theatres/ A&E resus.
Opened in 2016, ARTU is the major trauma ward for the hospital as well as providing specialised, hyper-acute rehabilitation in ten dedicated beds for patients with severe head injuries and other neurological conditions. The remaining beds on the unit provide acute multidisciplinary surgical care for patients with spinal, complex and multiple trauma, under the care of other acute specialties in the major trauma service. ARTU is a bespoke unit, focusing on severely injured patients within a rehabilitative environment.

The role requires attendance at the daily MDT handover each morning, Monday to Friday at 08:30h. The ATF will then join ward-based rounds with acute specialty teams, predominantly T&O, spinal surgery or Rehabilitation Medicine, or will undertake independent daily reviews of inpatients. The role also involves being available to the ward nursing staff to undertake clinical assessments, support with medication prescribing or assist with simple procedures such as venous cannulation or blood sampling. The ATF will order appropriate radiological and other investigations, as well as liaise with colleagues from a variety of specialties in the hospital. The ATF will work closely with all members of the MDT on the unit and attend patient and family meetings as needed.
