Consultant Ophthalmologist in Primary Eye Care

Job summary

This post is a replacement post due to the retirement of the current postholder. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing team to deliver a high quality and timely service to the local population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the service they will also work closely with the current team of consultant colleagues and undertake on call on a 1:21 basis (both weekday and weekend).

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general ophthalmic and cataract service and flexibility is required to meet the department's service commitment to delivery of efficient, safe and high-quality patient care.

The post holder must have an interest in primary care; a complementary sub-speciality interest would be welcome. Applicants with a complementary sub specialist interest will be required to have completed a substantial number of complementary speciality procedures and will be expected to have an excellent clinical quality record and be able to demonstrate the ability to run the service efficiently as well as demonstrate competency in performing specialist procedures independently in theatre.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both Primary eye Care and complementary specialty including general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients. S/he will work closely with clinical colleague, nursing and other allied health care staff to enhance the level of patient care at the Trust.

The final allocation of patient contact time, including theatre and clinics will be agreed in discussion with the Clinical Director.

  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a) Certificate of completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview. b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). c) European Community Rights
