Job summary

This post has been created to manage the increasing demand on the medical retina service. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing medical retina team to deliver a high quality and timely service to the local population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the service they will also work closely with the current team of consultant colleagues and participate in a 1 in 10 (both weekday and weekend) on call rota

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general ophthalmic and cataract service and flexibility is required to meet the department's service commitment to delivery of efficient, safe and high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both specialist medical retina and general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients. It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at two sessions in the operating theatre and three/four sessions a week in outpatient clinic in addition to administrative, management, clinical governance and supporting professional activity duties. S/he will work closely with clinical colleague, nursing and other allied health care staff in order to enhance the level of patient care at the Trust.

  • FRCOphth (or equivalent)
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a) Certificate of completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview. b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). c) European Community Rights

Desirable

  • Higher degree

Experience

Essential

  • Recognised sub-speciality training in medical retina
  • Appropriate experience and competencies as defined in the basic and higher specialist training curriculum of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists or demonstrate evidence of sound Ophthalmic training equivalent to that recognised in the UK.

Professional and Multidisciplinary Team Working

Essential

  • Comprehensive and sound knowledge of general ophthalmology and in particular medical retina subspecialty

Desirable

  • Attendance at appropriate meetings and courses covering the spectrum of the speciality
  • Attendance at sub speciality meetings
