Job summary

The post holder will join a current team of 2.5wte Consultant Paediatric Radiologists within a department of 45wte Consultant Radiologists. You will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality radiology service which performs more than 600,000 Imaging examinations and procedures per year.In 2022, there were almost 40,000 paediatric images performed.

The appointed applicant will support the delivery of a high quality paediatric radiology service to the new Staffordshire Children's Hospital at Royal Stoke which was launched on 20th March, 2020 providing a designated specialist centre for treating children and young people across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. This hospital within a hospital is part of the University Hospital North Midlands (UHNM) Royal Stoke site. County Hospital is the second hospital associated with the Trust in Stafford. The Paediatric Radiologists are Based at Royal Stoke.

The UHNM Imaging Directorate aims to provide first-class patient care, and to facilitate this a significant degree of subspecialisation has occurred within the Imaging Department. There is support if the post holder is interested in a sub-specialty within paediatric radiology. There is NO paediatric radiology on-call in UHNM, if interested, the post holder can be involved in adult on-call rota or in an adult sub-specialty area.

The job plan will include CPD SPA and Trust SPA sessions.

Main duties of the job

A standard job plan includes a shared rota covering inpatient reporting; including A&E, Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU), and Paediatric and Neonatal ICU, outpatient reporting; includes twice weekly dedicated paediatric MRI/CT General Anaesthesia (GA) lists, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy lists, and participating in paediatric MDTs and departmental meetings e.g. Audit and Discrepancy meetings.

As Paediatric Radiologist you will provide both general and specialised services using all modalities (radiographs, fluoroscopy, CT, MR, ultrasound, post-mortem, skeletal surveys, etc.) Any paediatric imaging performed at Stafford Hospital is reported from Royal Stoke through our award-winning PACS which allows reporting from either centre.

We also perform specialised video fluoroscopy lists with speech therapists, and PEJ tube positioning. Twice weekly dedicated outpatient paediatric MRI/CT General anaesthesia (GA) lists supported by paediatric anaesthetists who cover paediatrics 24/7 and also assist in many urgent inpatient MRI and CT examinations.

Weekly General Paediatrics, Neonatal Spinal and Respiratory MDTs and monthly MSK/Ortho Paediatric MDTs. Established programmes including the Kitten Club MRI Scanning via Play Specialists, Paediatric Radiographers manage Bedtime Babies/Melatonin scanning. Paediatric ultrasound is supported by paediatric sonographers, fluoroscopy by advance practice radiographers and radiograph reporting by advanced practitioners.

About us

Paediatric imaging is performed by an impressive number of well-trained radiographers many trained locally, through the radiography training programme at Keele University. There are state of the art x-ray, fluoroscopy and brand new GE Ultrasound machines. There are 9 CT scanners and 7 MRI, including three 3T at the trust supporting imaging services.

There are over 60 paediatric consultants and doctors at the Trust with many additional UHNM consultants who see adult and paediatric patients, both surgical and non-surgical, and refer paediatric patients for imaging services. There are around 100 dedicated paediatric beds.

Other sub-specialised services including neurosurgery, paediatric surgery and urology, with nearby tertiary centres: Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Clinicians from these centres hold paediatric clinics at UHNM, and imaging support is provided. This has led to accessing radiology opinions and expertise in these centres and regular monthly outpatient clinics from visiting surgeons from Alder Hey Children's hospital.

UHNM is a well-known paediatric Respiratory Service that is a referral centre for Cystic Fibrosis patients, Non-Invasive Ventilation, Sleep Study among others. There are 3 paediatric oncologists and specialise interest in Nephrology, Rheumatology, Allergy, Endocrine and Neurology. There is an experienced team of Community Paediatricians and a 24/7 child protection rota.
