This advert is offered for both trainee or qualified Cardiothoracic Surgical Care Practitioners (band 6 trainee, band 7 qualified). For the trainee position all training and course fees will be covered. Information related to Edge Hill course entry can be found below.
To join this MSc, you must:
- Be a registered non-medical practitioner working within a specific/specialist area of surgical practice, registered with a healthcare Professional Statutory Regulatory Body (PSRB).
- Demonstrate ability to work at master's level, evidenced by prior studies. Minimum requirement is typically a lower second-class honours degree. A third class honours degree classification and/or a relevant Diploma in Healthcare will be considered on an individual basis.
- Have completed at least 18 months post-registration experience in surgical practice.
Students whose education is in a language other than English, will also need IELTS 6.5, with no individual section less than 6.0, being regarded as meeting the general English requirements for awards, or equivalent alternative English language qualifications for students who are already in employment in the UK and where English is not their first language.
Main duties of the job
Under the direction of the supervising Consultant Surgeon, the Cardiac Surgical Practitioner will participate and assist in operative procedures. They will be expected to perform these duties to a high level of clinical skill and knowledge to achieve effective patient care and measurable outcomes.

Key Areas/Tasks
- To train to harvest suitable venous conduits for coronary artery by-pass surgery and ensure appropriate wound closure within a time frame acceptable to the supervising surgeon.
- To train to harvest suitable conduits from the patient arm for coronary artery by-pass surgery, and ensure appropriate wound closure within a time frame acceptable to the supervising surgeon.
- Will train to assist with the closure of median sternotomy and thoracotomy wounds. Act as first assistant.
- Will train to prepare the patient for surgery, incorporating urinary catheterisation, skin preparation and draping.
- Will learn to assist in emergency chest opening in the ward or theatre environment.
- Will train to undertake pre-operative assessment of the patient, to determine the suitability and availability of the various conduits.
- To train to become a role model in all aspects of patient care.
- Learn to ensure that care is given in accordance with the agreed Trust and Directorate policies, procedures and standards.
- Participates in the development and monitoring of standards and quality of care received by patients in a systematic way.
- Under guidance of Senior SCP will consult with medical, nursing staff and other relevant disciplines to develop and implement appropriate Cardiothoracic and Trust policies.
- Under the guidance of the Senior SCP the Trainee will learn the Trust policy for drug custody and administration.
- Organises and manages own workload in a logical and systematic way under supervision of the Senior SCP.
- Assists in the collection of statistical information as required.
- Trains to create an environment which is conducive to the optimum care and treatment of the patient, and ensures that the standards of cleanliness and good order are maintained, and that infection control practises are observed.
- Learn to keep adequate records of patient care, including care plans and adverse incident forms.
- Participates in Clinical Audit under the guidance of a Senior SCP.
