Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has occurred and we are looking for Physician Associates to join our team, the role will require you to participate in all aspects of patient care through knowledge gained from your PA training.

You will be working as part of an allied healthcare professional team including ACPs, Pharmacists and Healthcare Assistants and will be supported and supervised by a Consultant.

Under supervision of the Consultant you will provide care for the presenting patient from focused history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder must have completed an accredited Physician Associate training programme and passed national final examination in the UK.

They will work under the direction of the supervising Consultant, working collaboratively with other members of the hospital teams within the Trust's policies and clinical guidelines.

The job will involve inpatient work. They will carry out such tasks as approved by their department as a whole with input particularly from their supervising Consultant.

Job responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities

Provide direct clinical care to patients using established clinical guidelines, involving consulting with and referring patients to Physicians, medical specialists and other health professionals as indicated.

To interview patients, take medical histories, perform physical examinations, analyse diagnose and explain health problems.

To recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment and to perform specialised diagnostic physical exams and treatment procedures.

To fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes.

Provide accurate clinical instruction to nursing and other health professional as required.

To confer regularly with the supervising clinicians and other health care staff, refer specific patients, plan and co-ordinate activities, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems.

In exceptional circumstance to provide additional services on an emergency basis under the direction and responsible supervision of a clinician, as within the post holders clinical competence and which would not otherwise jeopardise the delivery services of patients.

To facilitate the discharge process.

In emergency situations, administer basic life support, and medications pending availability of a clinician.

To assist with the patient flow in clinical areas.

To chase treatment room investigation, communicate with the health care providers and parents taking appropriate action as needed liaising with the Consultant.

Managerial

To assist in clinical instruction and supervision of physician associate, medical and nursing students.

Participate in Departmental teaching and service development issues including clinical audit, quality improvement and clinical governance.

Education and Training

To keep up to date on relevant medical research, technology and related issues by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, reading journals.

To perform a variety of research and analysis tasks associated with medical diagnosis and treatment, including research into unusual symptoms and treatment options through consultation and physicians and other medical specialists, literature review and the like; review, analyse and determine the significance of a variety of diagnostic test results. Formulate diagnoses and treatment plans in consultation with or referring to supervising physician as appropriate.

Assist in developing a programme for the development and mentoring of UK home grown Physician Assistants.

To undertake 100 hours of continuing medical educational every 2 years.

To take the national re-certification exam every six years in accordance with the Managed Voluntary Register within the Royal College of Physicians Faculty of Physician Associates guidelines.

To be a member of the Royal College of Physicians Faculty of Physician Associates and on the Managed Voluntary Register.

Relationships

Liaises with, Consultants, Ward/Department Team, other Wards and Departments as appropriate to ensure patients receive optimum care.
