Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for a Health and Safety Officer. This is a hybrid site/home-working permanent role covering the northern counties within the Trust's geographical footprint. As such, the post holder can be based anywhere within these areas (Somerset, Wiltshire, BNSSG, Gloucestershire), but have the ability and willingness to travel as required.
The role is responsible for providing competent health and safety advice as well as delivering and monitoring health and safety arrangements. The role supports the Trust in ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation in order for the Trust to maintain the highest standards of health, safety and welfare for staff and patients. The post holder will report to the Deputy Health and Safety Manager (North).
You will be a qualified health and safety professional with post-qualification experience, excellent interpersonal skills, displaying diplomacy and tact through proactive engagement activity in order to build trust and increase safety culture to support the Trust's objectives for health and safety.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, able to work autonomously and as part of a wider team of health and safety professionals. They'll be supported by an innovative and collaborative team who have a passion for promoting and improving health and safety management.
Main duties of the job
- Provide competent health and safety advice for a wide range of health and safety subjects.
- Regularly produce and effectively communicate reports involving health and safety data.
- Regularly monitor accident/incident reports, proactively providing advice and guidance to managers in the investigation of RIDDOR incidents.
- Develop and provide training to managers and staff in relation to health and safety.
- Facilitate and attend meetings with key stakeholders and present reports on health and safety performance.
- Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess the risks present in a specific work areas, workplaces or processes to identify unsafe working conditions and practices. Make judgements to inform recommendations to remedy any defects found and ensure any recommendations made are acted upon.
- Develop, implement, and report on a programme of health and safety inspections and audits.
- Proactively ensure health and safety actions arising from health and safety activities are monitored and updated accordingly.
- Facilitate and assist with the completion of risk assessments for all aspects of Trust work. These will include generic risk assessments, site specific risk assessments, DSE assessments, COSHH assessments, fire risk assessments (list not exhaustive).
