Job summary

Are you an experienced emergency response driver, or an experienced approved driving instructor looking for a new challenge?

During 2023/24 we aim to expand our driver training capacity to meet new legislative requirements and increased training demand. As such we are looking for candidates to join an established team as new recruits. If successful at the interview and assessment stage you will be called forwards for training.

For our successful candidates we provide full training to become an accredited, nationally recognised emergency response driving instructor within the ambulance sector. The work our team undertakes is critical to the functioning of our service. We train new Paramedics and Emergency Care Assistants response driving skills which they will use everyday to reach our patients quickly and safely. We also deliver a wide range of specialist training such as 4x4 off road driving, trailer training and convoy response.

Main duties of the job

To apply for this role, you need to meet the criteria for one of the pathways detailed below:

Pathway 1 [Qualified Emergency Response Drivers]

  • Be currently qualified as an emergency response driver (hold an approved Ambulance, Police or Fire service certificate)
  • Need to be enrolled on, and have successfully completed part one of the Ministry of Transport's Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor (DVSA ADI) programme
  • Hold a full valid GB driving licence with a C1 category entitlement
  • Must not have more than 3 penalty points on your driving licence, and zero points on your SWAST internal virtual driving licence, with a clean Trust driving record [SWAST employees].
  • Fulfil DVSA Group 2 medical licencing standards
  • Must have driven emergency response regularly within last 18 months.
  • If a SWAST employee, you should have the support of your line manager to apply for the programme.

Pathway 2 - DVSA Approved Driving Instructors

  • DVSA Grade A or B
  • Must provide evidence which can be substantiated of current teaching / instruction for last 6 / 12 months.
  • Hold a full valid GB driving licence with a C1 category entitlement
  • Must not have more than 3 penalty points on your driving licence
  • Fulfil DVSA Group 2 medical licencing standards
