Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists providing wheelchair assessment and prescription, and postural management advice to children, young people and adults in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The post holder will be required to participate in the delivery of the Wheelchair Service providing specialist assessments and advice to clients including those who present with highly complex needs. They will contribute to clinical governance and service development within the Wheelchair Service in partnership with professional specialists, the Clinical Lead and Wheelchair Service Team Lead.

Due to the nature of the role, it is essential you are able to travel independently on a daily basis to and from the base, patient's homes and other venues around the geographical area, which may not be accessible by public transport.

This post will suit both Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists looking to enhance their skills in postural management and wheelchair prescription in a community setting.

Main duties of the job

This job is currently only open to people who already work for the NHS in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly. To use specialist knowledge and apply an advanced level of clinical skill to the assessment of mobility, functional, postural and pressure care needs of clients with a broad range of disability

To complete non-standard and specialist wheelchair prescriptions and accessories using the Eligibility Criteria and Equipment Matrix including Tilt-in-Space Rea Azalea, Lightweight Active, Sunrise Medical powered Q Range with Sedeo seating, Bespoke moulded seating, Spex seating, specialist pressure/postural cushions - Gel and Air

To carry out complex postural assessment of fixed and flexible deformities for adults and children and formulate a treatment plan based on findings and comprehensive product knowledge

  • Current professional registration with the HCPC
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy
  • IELTS unless qualification taken in English

Desirable

  • Evidence of appropriate postgraduate courses, such as Oxford Posture Management for People with Complex Disability (4-day course or PG Cert)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in a relevant clinical field, such as learning disability, neurological, paediatric, or surgical
  • Experience of working in a wheelchair and / or postural management related field
  • Experience assessing cognitive, sensory, and motor impairment and its impact on function, posture, and mobility

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching skills and identifying learning needs; designing and delivering education and training; and use of a wide variety of media

  • Highly developed skills of clinical assessment and evaluation, including knowledge of conditions and comorbidities resulting in permanent loss of mobility and associated postural and pressure issues
