Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia CESR

Job summary

The three-year post provides training in a range of anaesthetic sub-specialities to facilitate the post-holder preparing and submitting a portfolio application for specialist registration (CESR) with the GMC. 18 months will be spent at East Surrey Hospital and 18 months at St George's Hospital. This programme is recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for Portfolio Pathway.

Fellows will have the opportunity to apply for special interest modules in anaesthetic sub-specialities provided at St Georges including airway, regional, neurosurgery, cardiac, paediatrics, trauma, obstetrics, vascular, and peri-operative medicine.

Fellows will also carry out anaesthetic duties at a level appropriate to clinical experience and competence and this will also determine the degree of supervision. This post will help the anaesthetist to consolidate evidence of knowledge, skills and experience within a safe environment. Fellows are supported with mentoring, clinical support and educational supervision appropriate to with their needs.

Main duties of the job

The post is a 1:8 full shift rota. Post-holders are be allocated to the appropriate on call rota based on skills and experience. Fellows will provide anaesthetic cover in areas such as general, trauma, paediatric, neurosurgical and cardiac theatres as well as for trauma and cardiac arrest calls, cardiac catheter lab, neuroradiology and obstetrics subject to agreement.

Fellows are required to undertake an annual educational performance review in which they must demonstrate adequate documented progression towards the goal of submitting a successful CESR application. This is in addition to the required appraisal for registration with the GMC. Commitment and enthusiasm to progress through the necessary domains, leadership qualities and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary teams is also reviewed annually. Progression/renewal of annual contract will dependent on a positive outcome from annual reviews.

The post holders will observe the trusts agreed policies and procedures on clinical matters and will follow the standing orders and financial instructions of St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust and East Surrey Hospital.

The anaesthetic service is spread throughout 24 inpatient operating theatres in 3 wings, and there is a separate day unit with a further 5 theatres. Outside of theatres, the department is involved in interventional radiological services for cardiac, neurosurgical, endovascular and chronic pain as well as MRI and CT scanning.

The anaesthetic department provides emergency care in Accident and Emergency, in particular in support of the Major Trauma Centre status of the Trust. An acute pain team is attached to the department and receives anaesthetic input. The department also supports the work of the hospital in all clinical areas.
