Job summary

We will have a vacancy in Neurosurgery, fixed term for 12 months .

The Senior Neuro-oncology Fellow post will provide excellent experience for candidates who have completed neurosurgical training and passed the FRCS(Neuro.Surg) exam or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

St George's Healthcare NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Senior Neurosurgical Clinical Fellow with an interest in Neuro-oncology. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the neurosurgery service and will join an existing team of Specialist Registrars and Academic Registrars at St George's Hospital and will share on-call duties equally based on an EWTD compliant rota banded at 1B (40%).

Job description

Job responsibilities

Duties of the Postholder

  • Full time position with ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Expected to run out-patient clinics and operating sessions accordingly (patients will be under a designated consultant)
  • Working with a team of clinical and academic registrars
  • Cross- cover of colleagues absence as required
  • Perform on-call duties including operating out-of-hours at a level appropriate of a Senior SpR
  • The post-holder will be able to attend clinics with the Clinical Oncologists based at both the Royal Marsden and Royal Surrey County Hospital. These will be included within the timetable.
  • On-call will be shared equally with the other ST4+ level post-holders and will be banded at 1B (40%)
  • The post holder will run a weekly clinic in neuro-oncology with the neuro-oncology CNS
  • There will be ample opportunity to perform audit and research projects at St Georges and at RMH and RSCH
  • This post would incorporate an element of service development
  • The post holder will be expected to travel between all the Trust sites and also those necessary to fulfil their duties
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the Neuro-oncology CNS to facilitate the effective clinical management and seamless care of patients with brain and spinal tumours

The Clinical Fellow accepts that he/ she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable, with his/ her colleagues, both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the department that while junior doctors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this subsection are exceptional and, in particular, that junior medical staff not be required to undertake such work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
