Job summary
- To support the service dedicated to the care of children and young people with major haemoglobinopathies and other long term non-malignant haematological condition
- The post holder will work with the network multidisciplinary team to provide expert clinical care and management for children with major haemoglobinopathies, and their families and carers. He/she will ensure care is given that recognises not only individual medical needs but also their social and developmental needs. The post holder will be expected to play an active role in continuing to develop safe and effective network services, and to assist in designing patient pathways to ensure optimalcare in the best environment. Along with the rest of the clinical team, he/she will beresponsible for ensuring the national peer review standards for haemoglobin disorders are met and maintained
- In addition to his/her managerial and strategic role, the post holder will be expected to play an active role in the day-to-day care of patients with haemoglobin disorders and other non-malignant haematological disorders, with a view to running independent clinic assessments, and providing expert advice to non-specialists.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Care Management: Administering specialized treatments such as regular blood transfusions and monitoring for adverse reactions. They provide care during outpatient visits, hospital stays, and in the community. Case Coordination: Acting as a central contact point for families to navigate complex care, reducing, and sometimes avoiding, hospital admissions. Education and Training: Providing comprehensive education to children, families, and schools about the condition, treatment, and self-management. They also develop educational programs for staff. Holistic Support: Addressing the emotional, psychological, and practical needs of the child and family, offering support to reduce feelings of being overwhelmed. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Working: Collaborating closely with consultants, community teams, and specialists to develop and implement care plans. Service Development: Developing nursing protocols, patient information documents, and maintaining databases. Transition Care: Supporting adolescents as they transition to adult

St Georges has a long-established paediatric hematology service caring for children with haemoglobinopathies, hemophilia and other inherited or long-term non-cancer blood disorders across SW London, Surrey and Sussex areas. This is the first appointment of a NonMalignant/ Haemoglobinopathies paediatric nurse specialist.The post is supported by Roald Dahls Marvellous Childrens Charity, bringing its experience in supporting nurses looking after children with long-term health conditions. As a Roald Dahl nurse the post holder will network with other Roald Dahl non-malignant hematology nurses, have support forprofessional development and attend the annual Roald Dahl nursing conference.The nurse will work as part of the team in providing patient reviews, school liaison andeducation, patient and family community support, GP support, and establishing a robustnursing education programme. They will support protocol and patient information development,develop nursing documents to support the care and management of patients; develop andmaintain patient databases. The CNS will work closely with children attending day care or admitted as inpatients and act as the key worker for transition from paediatric to adult services.
