Main duties of the job

St. George's is one of the leading stroke services in the UK with a strong history of clinical stroke research. The service comprises the single Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) serving South West London, as well as providing a Stroke Unit (SU) and rapid access TIA service for local patients. The hospital provides a 24/7 thrombectomy service for patients across a population of 3.2m and operates in conjunction with King's College Hospital.

The stroke and neurology services at St. George's have expanded significantly in recent years. There are approximately 1600 admissions to the HASU per annum with 1200 confirmed stroke admissions per annum. We have a 20 bedded HASU to provide service to patients from South West London, and also a 16 bedded Stroke Unit providing services for local patients. The HASU receives patients from South West London (catchment areas of St. George's, Croydon University Hospital, St. Helier, and Kingston) and provides tertiary services to partner hospitals in Surrey. Regional patients are repatriated when clinically stable and local patients move to the St. George's Stroke Unit. The HASU has all the necessary support facilities including continuous non-invasive physiological monitoring of all beds, access to interventional procedures, both neurosurgery and neuroradiological, and access to neuro ITU. We operate a seven day service with daily consultant ward rounds including at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
