St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dawes Senior Clinical Fellow in Neurology

The closing date is 06 February 2026

Job summary

One year, fixed-term Clinical Neurology Fellow post with a focus on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). We have funding for this from a legacy. The aim of funding this post is for it to be a catalyst for transforming regional TBI care across the Southwest London and Surrey Major Trauma Network. This will improve care for patients with TBI through service improvement, by focussing particularly on mapping a TBI network on major trauma infrastructure regionally. Patient voice has been central to shaping the proposal. Traumatic Brain Injury is an area where there is currently limited local and national investment.

The department prides itself on its focus on education and training and work very hard to deliver high quality training. In recognition of this, we are consistently one of the highest performing neurosciences units in the UK on the GMC Trainee Surveys. We have an excellent track record of supporting clinical fellows to secure NTNs in neurology or allied disciplines in London or other UK institutions. We will tailor the training available to the needs of each candidate so we can also provide "senior registrar" training for potential candidates who are post-CCT and looking for consultant positions.

Main duties of the job

St George's is a specialist clinical TBI centre and is widely regarded as a national and international leader in multi-disciplinary TBI care. This positions it uniquely to deliver a model of care with potential national relevance and long-term impact. Despite its status, the team has historically lacked the clinical capacity to extend its influence beyond the hospital and into regional or national system development. The post will be embedded within the existing TBI service at St George's, building on its well-established reputation. The postholder will:

  • Focus on TBI, particularly within the context of regional TBI service improvement within the SW London and Surrey major trauma network.

  • Develop strong working links with the Clinical Director for Major Trauma at St George's and the Clinical Director for Major Trauma for the SW London and Surrey Major Trauma Network.

  • Be supported to map a TBI network onto the existing, well-established major trauma infrastructure across the region. This would greatly improve TBI patient care in the seven regional trauma units.

  • Support the long-standing aspiration of the St George's TBI team to coordinate a regional approach to care. This has previously been unachievable due to limited TBI consultant time.

About us

St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the main teaching hospital in the south west sector of London and as such has developed links with most district general hospitals throughout Surrey and Sussex and supports a significant training programme for junior doctors who rotate through the Trust. The Trust is on three sites: St George's Hospital, the base for acute general medicine, surgical services and level one neuro-rehabilitation, Queen Mary's Hospital Roehampton for rehabilitation and community services and St. John's Therapy Centre in Battersea. The Trust serves three local Primary Care Trusts and a population of about 1.3 million across South West London. A number of our specialist services, including Neurosciences, serve a population of around 3.5 million people across South West London, Surrey and Sussex.

Neurosciences used to be based at Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon, where the world's first CT scanner was developed by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and James Ambrose. In 2003, the hospital closed and moved to a new, purpose-built wing at St George's, sharing accommodation with the regional cardiothoracic unit. The new Atkinson Morley Wing is arranged over five floors, around inner courtyards. There are 233 in-patient and day-case beds, eight operating theatres and a range of state-of- the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities
