Job summary
This post provides an excellent opportunity to gain ST1-3 level experience in paediatric surgery, particularly the pre and post-op management of surgical and medical complications. Patients are often complex and you will be working with other paediatric subspecialties, at a busy tertiary paediatric centre.
It would suit someone looking to expand their paediatric surgery experience in the UK prior to applying for a training post in Paediatric Surgery (including FY3 experience).
The post offers experience with a wide range of complex and interesting patients and an excellent teaching programme.
The post will be part of the paediatric surgical team. The work will include experience atin-patient wards, and children's emergency department.
The post is 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday pattern with no out-of-hours working.
Main duties of the job
This Paediatric surgery SHO appointment is primarily to deliver care for paediatric surgery inpatients on the surgical wards.
Duties will involve daily assessment of the children, participating in paediatric surgery consultant-led ward rounds and working with the specialists to arrange investigations and treatment. There is a Foundation Year 1 doctor, a Physician's associate and a Paediatric surgery registrar and some responsibility for ward work will be divided between the team [eg help in prescribing IV fluids and medications] with cover for leave as needed.
The post holder will also have the support of the General Paediatric Registrar and Consultant for medical complications in surgical patients when required.
The post holder will hand these children over to the paediatric on-call staff at the end of the working day. There are no on-call commitments.

It is co-located with a medical school - St. George's, University of London. Children managed at SGH are either local, or regional tertiary patients. There has been a steady increase in the number of paediatric attendees in the Emergency department, in inpatient emergency admissions and outpatient referrals for local children. This reflects the increasing young population in SW Thames. Tertiary children's services at SGH include endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, oncology, allergy, paediatric surgery, PICU, trauma and respiratory medicine. The hospital is the second Trust in London with a helipad.

1. Clinical / professional
Take part in all of the treatment and assessment services of the department as and when requested, and work within the policies and procedures of the organisation.
Take patient histories and perform physical examinations of a patient. Record the history and examination in the medical records.
Perform other tasks in which the SHO has been trained and is proficient in performing eg phlebotomy, cannulations, lumbar punctures, central line access, etc.
Work collaboratively with the clinical team, i.e. consultants, junior doctors, CNS, nursing staff, therapy staff etc. to encourage and ensure good working relationships.
Support the pre-operative assessment of patients for surgery to ensure optimisation of patients health prior to admission for surgery.
To contribute to supporting colleagues to meet the 18-week pathway.
To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practices and national guidelines.
To fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork.
Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries, prescriptions and support optimising bed capacity.
Be responsible for a recognised caseload of patients in the day-to-day management of care.
To report all actual and potential clinical incidents involved in, in accordance with the Trusts reporting procedures for untoward events using the electronic reporting system (DATIX)

To ensure effective and up-to-date IT skills are maintained in order to be able to fully use Trust IT systems as appropriate.
